This legendary swashbuckling privateer called this area Campeche, when he dominated it from 1817 to around 1821. He built Maison Rouge, a two-story half-house, half-fort, that served as his base of operations. When the US decided to crack down on his piracy (to strengthen relations with Spain), he set fire to Campeche rather than let it be taken. And then, the legend practically disappears, his legacy swathed in mystery. Did he leave a treasure behind or bury it somewhere else on the Texas Gulf Coast? Folklore says so, but no one has found it to date (in spite of a lot of building).

In spite of his short-lived inhabitation, this corsair’s presence is strongly felt in this community. Many businesses and locations around here are named for the buccaneer, including the area where this letterbox is placed. About 12 miles west of Maison Rouge, this covert location was actually home to the Karankawa Indians, a fierce enemy who often raided Campeche.

Nestled within a subdivision, the park/nature preserve where the box is located is open from sun up to sun down.

Park at the map/trail head and begin your journey on the boardwalk. After you pass the gazebo, take the first left and then another left. After the Cottonmouth sign, you will come to a Hackberry sign on your right. 26 steps after the Hackberry sign, there is a hollow tree on your left just off the trail. Our pirate’s treasure is resting inside this tree, beneath leaves and bark. Take the usual precautions and prod with a stick. Although we didn’t see any snakes, they do live here. Please also take the time to rehide well. This box is not far off the trail and its survival depends on good re-hiding.

Thanks for taking the time to solve our puzzle. Give us a shout and let us know what you thought of the “treasure.”
