------------------------------------------------------------

This is a short enjoyable hike, especially for families with kids and will take less than half an hour on easy terrain.

Located in Eau Claire's Carson Park, a 134-acre peninsula nestled inside horseshoe-shaped Half Moon Lake is Paul Bunyan's Camp! Carson Park features the Paul Bunyan Camp, which faithfully recreates a 19th-century northwoods logging camp; a working quarter-scale railroad; picnic pavillions; access for fishing and canoeing; and the baseball stadium where homerun king Hank Aaron played his first professional games, and where the Eau Claire Cavaliers still play ball on balmy summer evenings.

Begin your search by parking in the Paul Bunyan Camp parking lot. At the Paul and Babe statues, you can read about the unfortunate history of the Paul Bunyan statue and the community spirit that brought Paul back to life! The museum itself is open year round with longer hours during the summer months. 1-5 pm daily, closed Mondays and open late (8 pm) on Tues. during the school year. Memorial Day to Labor Day, Museum hours are 10 am - 5 pm Daily, 1-5 pm Sundays and open late on Tuesdays (8 pm) Adult admissions are $4, children 4-17 are $1.50, children under 4 are free. All admissions on Tues. evenings are free.

The hunt for this letterbox does not require you to visit the museum, but we enjoyed our visit to the museum a few years ago and thought you might like to consider visiting too.

Once you are in the Paul Bunyan Camp parking lot, walk to the far end of the lot towards the rail fence where a walk-path begins. Follow this path toward the playground, staying right until you sight the double "flume" slides on the side of the hill. Continue on past the slides walking between them and the old swingset on the left and look for a path going into the woods on the right. Stay on this path, until you sight a path going to the left. If you reach the park drive without making the left, you have gone too far. The path to the left may be difficult to see, because it was a bit overgrown with brush when we were there. You will know you have found it if you shortly arrive at a small crescent shaped parking area just off the park drive. From there, continue on across the park drive toward the river and pick up the path again there. Take the path going left and then follow along as it parallels the river and the park drive. Walk this path until you reach a very short boardwalk. After crossing this boardwalk, turn right on the very next trail leading towards the river and sight the twin Birch stump just to the right where the Lumbering Duo have been resting.

Please be discreet and rehide very well. If you are of the pint size version of a lumberjack, you may enjoy playing in the playground a bit before picking up your boxing mobile. It would be a great place to spend an afternoon with a picnic.
