“Beaver” Pond Letterboxes
planted by Bluebird for the Killingworth Land Trust’s Second Annual Trails Day Hike
June 4, 2005

AS OF 7/07, ONE END OF THE POND TRAIL IS VERY WET; NOT PASSABLE! The land trust is investigating the cause.

This trail is a one mile loop on KLCT Property on Chittenden Road in Killingworth, CT. The walk should take less than one hour, including finding boxes and stamping in. The terrain is suitable for children ages 5 and up. Despite its name, there are no beavers here at present!

Find Chittenden Road just south of the Route 80/Route 81 intersection in Killingworth. Take a right on Chittenden and proceed .7 miles and park on the south side of the road by #97. You will see a double-white-blazed telephone pole on the north side of the road, marking the trail entrance. You can hop over the wall (beware of P.I. , since the house owner semi-blocked the path that is on his property)

Walk through the pachysandra and along the right side of the garage. This IS land trust property! Follow the white blazes to the left, then through an old wall, and to the right into the woods.

Enjoy the old woods road lined with large trees and rock walls. At a fork, go left for a clockwise loop around the pond. Cross a metal bridge and soon come to the remains of an old fire pit (?) which is now just a rocky area on the trail. On the left is an opening in the wall. Step through, go left 5 steps and find the Beaver Lodge box in a cave in the wall.

Continue to follow the white blazes around the back side of the pond. Just as you reach the far end of that back side, note a large downed beech tree on your left. Look in its roots for the Where’s the Beaver box.

Follow white to cross a stream and complete the loop!
When the loop is complete and you are at the intersection, about to go left and back to your car. look near the large tree on the left at that corner for the bonus (added 7/10/05).
