IMPORTANT UPDATE! 10/08/05 We checked on Jake and Jaz and had reports Jaz's tree fell this summer. This was indeed the case. Since this is bear country and two "rogue" dogs do not belong in this park anyway, we were not surprised to find a "Bigger Paws Bear" has taken over the spot where Jake previously hid out. We assume Jake and Jaz ran off leaving the bear alone in the park. We hope to catch up with Jake and Jaz again sometime soon...........Keep an eye on these clues and we will report back when Jake and Jaz have been sighted!

These are easy finds with some minor slopes. Finding the boxes will take less than half an hour, but we encourage you to pack a picnic, bring the swim suit or a good book and plan to spend more time.

Our JakerJaz series is done in honor of my sister's two dogs who reside in Eau Claire and they have their own website! Check it out, it is kind of fun. Jake is a Yellow Lab and Jaz (Jasper) is a Nova Scotia Duck Tailed Retriever http://webpages.charter.net/jakerjaz/

Even though these boxes are located in an Eau Claire County Park, known as Big Falls, where no dogs are allowed, we took Jake and Jaz there in letterbox form anyway. Located on the Eau Claire River, this area is very scenic and has been a popular area for UW-Eau Claire college students to go to get away from academia. We make a point of trying to visit Big Falls at least once each summer, more often if we can. There are beautiful Falls, sand bars and rocks to climb. In certain areas, the river is shallow enough to wade across, with a little risk taking spirit. In the past we have waded across the river with the kids and have even seen people "riding the rapids" in the "mini-falls" area. It is common to see sun-bathers on the rocks and bear paw prints in the sand.

Eau Claire County Parks use to be free, but recently they have required admission fees via self registration. Daily vehicle passes are $3 and annual passes are $20.

To access this park, take Hwy K north out of Fall Creek, or from Eau Claire take Hwy 12 east to N. Elco Dr, across from Elmers. Go left/north on Elco Drive and then right on Hwy SS. Then left on Hwy K. Once on Hwy K, watch for the Big Falls County Park South Entrance Sign on your left just a few miles north of Hwy SS. This is a dirt road that will wind it's way in with many smaller side roads. Stay on the main road until you arrive at the paved parking lot, where you can self- register for the park fee.

From the parking lot begin walking toward the river and the sound of the Falls via the paved path that will soon turn to gravel and dirt. Watch for the path to split just before you arrive at the river edge and take the stepped path to the right. Follow this path as it goes a short distance east along the south bank of the river and towards the sand bar. Just before you reach the short slope to the sand bar look for 2-3 steps in the path made by the tree roots of a pine tree just right of the path. Check the hole under this tree made by another tree root to find Jake. Please rehide well while being discreet.

To find Jaz, return to the top of the wood stairs you previously descended (not the short root steps). Once there, take a bearing of 160 degrees and walk 40 steps to the tree. In this tree you will find a large hole and Jaz inside. Please rehide this very well and be very discreet and aware of others in the area.

Please enjoy this park as much as we have. We believe that to truly enjoy this park, you have to at least get your feet wet and throw a few skipping stones as well. There is a north entrance to this park as well, that will enable you to explore the opposite river bank where there are more rocks to climb. Access that entrance by going north on Hwy. K, then left on Q. Follow the signs to S 110th Av.
