Fairly short hike uphill to the box. If anyone figures the distance, please let me know. Dogs ok.

The phoenix bird symbolizes immortality, resurrection and life after death. In ancient Greek and Egyptian mythology, it is associated with the sun god.

Directions: North Mountain Park in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. From the 7th St. entrance, go to the right (One way) to the Maricopa picnic area and park.

Clues: Take trail 44 up the "rocky steps". Follow it on up. If you look back, you'll have a view of the city, but keep going until you have a view in front of you. At the top of this hill section, stay on trail 44 to the left, up more "rocky steps" to a paved path. The city vehicles do drive on it, so watch out. Follow the paved path up (to the left) and go around the curve. Note the wide gravel "lookout" at the curve. Keep going, and after the clearing on the right, look between 2 creosote bushes for a small palo verde tree behind a flattened rock jutting out of the hill side, just off the trail, pointing to the satellites on the hill across the way, and to the trails down below. Go to this rock, and below the pointing part of the rock, is another pointing part along the bottom of the rock that hides the phoenix. Be careful on the hill side - the rocks are very slippery - hold on tight to the rock, as you reach under. Of course, also remember the desert hazards and watch for critters. Please tuck the box back in so it won't tumble down the hill.
