I am completely showing my age with this series, but what a nice trip down memory lane it’s been!

If there’s one thing the 80’s knew how to do best, it’s cartoons. How many of us spent the better part of this decade’s Saturday mornings plopped in front of the television, eating cheerios in our PJ’s (and Underoos), absorbing moral lessons and catchphrases from the likes of Lion-O and Papa Smurf?

To begin your journey, slip on your leg-warmers, dig out your old G.I. Joe action figures to bring along for the ride and head to Anna Page Park, located at 2800 N. Springfield Road, just north of Auburn Street on the western edge of Rockford, IL. Take the right fork after turning into the main entrance and drive until you see a bench on your right facing a “bridge” of rocks that crosses the creek and park along the road.

For the rest of the clues, answer the following trivia question to see just how much of a TV junkie you used to be. Email me your answers using the Contact the Placer option.

1. What is the name of the home of the Care Bear Cousins?
2. What planet did the ThunderCats live on?
3. What was the entire alliterative name and home of the bad guy on Strawberry Shortcake?
4. Which of the following prime-time characters did not end up with a Saturday morning cartoon?
a. Punky Brewster b. Webster c. Mr. T. d. Alf
5. What were the Smurf’s two human friends called?

UPDATE: 4/11/08

I am no longer requiring answers to the above questions. You can still try your hand at answering them for fun, but I live out of state now and cannot keep up with the requests for this box, so I'm just going to let people get them at their own pace and not have to wait for me to give them the clues. I would love feedback on how these are doing. PLEASE NOTE: This can be a VERY busy park. Please try to be subtle, especially for box #1! And bring your bugspray, you'll need it!

CLUES:

#1

Walk up to the bench and "sit, rest and enjoy the view" of a bridge in the distance. Your first stop is for the Power of Grayskull. Head toward the bridge, but do not cross it. Keep walking along the creek, and over a woodchip walkway. A path along the right edge of the clearing will lead down to the creek, and to you first box in this series, hidden under the fork of a fallen tree that's closest to you.

#2

Retrace your steps, cross the bridge, take a left, and follow the "Caution Ahead" sign. Make note of a path veering to the left at the third orange arrow but do not follow it quite yet. Right now, it's time to visit the most truly, truly, truly outrageous singer to ever grace the stage (like, totally!). Before long, another choice will be in front of you. Take the right path, and then right again when going left would have taken you around a curve and up a small hill. After walking under the fallen branches, a large fallen tree will stretch out from the path on your left. She's waiting here, probably still pining after Rio all these years later.

#3

Head back to the path I had you note before. Crumbs, chief, be careful! There could be an evil greenback toad afoot because we know that where ever there is danger, he'll be there. Roughly 90 steps over the small logs marking the threshold to this path, the greatest secret agent in the world is waiting for you in the base of the fallen arm of a tree to your right. The correct tree has a hole in it at knee length.

#4

Just in case the forest is starting to look a little dingy, you might need some help collecting color crystals. Go back to the bridge and take the path in the other direction. Follow the path as it follows the creek. Along the way, you will cross over an intersecting road that leads across the creek to your right. Keep going until you reach the contradicting arrows on your left. Another 120 steps past these arrows, you will see the shining light at the base of a tree on your right with at least 9 trunks (the closest one to you has been cut off).

#5

After carefully replacing the colorful cutie in #4, take a look across the creek. A huge tree with more trunks than you can count is standing right across from you. Make your way to the other side of the creek (I don't suggest crossing here, the sandy bottom is very soft and deep). A little bit of Care-A-Lot resides here on earth, nestled at the base of these trunks. NOTE - as with all letterboxes, please rehide carefully. Take special care with this last one , however, to make sure it is not visible to those who might wander by accidentally.

PLEASE rehide all of the boxes extremely well. And don't forget to check LBNA for the additions that I placed later. If anyone wants to add to this series and can find a good enough hiding spot, please feel free. I know I only scratched the surface of an entire decade's worth of half-hour long toy commercials (oops! I mean "quality children's programming"). Enjoy!
