The first box easy, the second a bit more difficult rocky climb. Bring your own ink for the Birches.

You may want to take clues for Sunset Serenade Letterbox.

Follow directions to “The Fells” letterbox and travel on Rt. 103A to Chalk Pond Road with a large sign for Sunapee Hills. This road is north of the Fells. Drive 0.3 mi. on Chalk Pond Rd to the Kidder Tract sign and park by the gate. This is the back side of Sunset Hill. You’ll find the informational sign interesting. Mr. Kidder attempted to develop this site for condos but went bankrupt and the project was abandoned. As you walk on the dirt road, you’ll see where some clearing was done – even a sign for the parking lot for the tennis courts. The road will narrow as you proceed. Watch for a curve of the road to the left with 4 white birches on the right. One of the birches is a slingshot tree. Look to the left as you pass these and locate smaller birches and 2 large rocks not far off the road. Find the Birch letterbox behind the left stone.

Continue on the road to a sign for Sunset Hill Trail entering the woods. Follow the yellow blazes carefully. Some are fairly far apart. At the y-shaped old yellow birch with a blaze on one of its arms go to the right of the tree as you search for the next blaze, continuing uphill. The trail is not as distinct here but you should be able to find the blazes. Continue to climb. When you come to a stone wall that you cross over, stop on the uphill side. Take 4 steps to the left to a rock protruding from the wall, near the ground, by a fallen birch log and standing yellow birch tree. Look in the opening under the rock, behind leaves and a piece of a branch for Chickweed. I hope this isn’t someone’s home.

Continue following the yellow trail to the summit for a great view and the Sunset Serenade box. You may want to take the short side trail before reaching the summit to another viewpoint from where you can see the town of New London. Retrace your steps to your vehicle. I’d love to hear about your experience.
