This box is located on the Horseneck Beach State Reservation.

* store bought stamp.

The name “Horseneck” is believed to be a corruption of “Hassenegk”, an Indian name for Westport’s long, sandy beaches.

Horseneck is spread across nearly 600 acres of barrier beach and salt marsh. Behind the dunes near Gooseberry Neck is a 100-site campground. This is the place of memories. Here are some:

Stuffies by the campfire, clamming, finding lifelong friends, finding love, watching your kids play on the beach, years later – watching their kids play on the beach, amazing sunsets, clam cakes at Shandy’s, flying kites, Store At Your Door, tug of war, riding bikes, windy days, waiting in line to get on the list, baby toes first touch sand and long walks on the beach. And, of course, collecting small treasures that wash up on the beach.

DIRECTIONS TO HORSENECK BEACH:
Route 195 to Route 88 South – Follow Rte 88 South 11 miles to the end and follow the signs.

THE BOX:
Pick a route to collect your treasure:

1. From the Main Beach: (There is a fee to park here, $7 as of this date) Find the bike path and follow it until you reach the gate to the campground.

2. From the campground itself: From the waterfront road – facing the water – turn right and take the bike path toward the Main Beach.

3. From East Beach Road or Gooseberry Island: (Free to Park) Park on the island and walk back over the causeway. Take your first left onto a short dead end road. (To make a quicker trip you can also park across the street from the road right on East Beach) The gate at the end of the road is an entrance to the campground. Pass through the gate onto the bike path. Follow the path into the campground and stay straight on this road and at the other end you will find yourself at a gate back on the bike path and headed toward the Main Beach.

From the gate and facing Main Beach walk 80 steps to a sandy path on the right. Take the path. Immediately on your right you see a lone pine shrub tree. The box is under rocks at its base.
