You guessed it... It's Memorial Day weekend so we went camping. We've camped here many times but not since I discovered the pastime of letterboxing! What a perfect opportunity to meet up with family and take the youngins on a hike... and plant letterboxes. The fruits of our labor are for you to enjoy.
This hike is about 3 miles to the furtherst box, where you can turn around and come back for a 6 mile hike, or continue around the lake for a 13-miler. If you do that - the trail is in good condition and not much elevation gain. Or - continue from box #4 and take the trail to Little Crater Lake. It's worth it.
Start at the northwest shore of Timothy Lake. From the dam, drive clockwise along the shore to the trailhead/parking area. Northwest Forest Pass is in effect here.
Kumbaya. Take the trail to an area obviously affected by a strong storm, where you see all kinds of downed timber. Watch for the remains of a stump in the middle of the trail. On your right is a 5-foot stump. At the base between the stump and a fir, unbury Kumbaya. Please be sure to re-cover well as this one is right on the trail. Continue on down the trail.
Making Camp. From the 4-way, turn left, until you reach some scattered logs on each side of the trail. On the right, behind 1 of the fir trees, is Making Camp. This tree is kinda in the middle of the other large fir trees and has a very skinny youngster a few feet behind it. You will see the obvious stack of rocks and bark covering the crevice at the base of the tree.
Meditation Point/Peace & Quiet. 12 paces past Site 4, notice a low stump. On the Point side, dig out the loose bark. Return to the main trail.
Happy Trails. If you are a trail-watcher: when you see a 2 foot skinny tree root parallel to and in the middle of the trail, with a flat 8" rock 5 paces ahead of it, start watching for the woodpecker-pecked tree ahead of you. If you are a tree-watcher: Watch for a very woodpecker-pecked tree. There is also a small 1 foot stump in front of it. On the other side of the trail are 3 firs and a widowmaker leaning between trees 2 and 3. Don't walk under the widowmaker, Ben, you aren't even married yet. Behind tree #1, under bark and slightly buried is Happy Trails.
My thanks to neice Braidy and nephews Tony, Ben and Tim for helping with planting and testing my clues.
