Clues: Interstate 81, north of Syracuse. In the mile and a half between Exit 39 (Mannsville) and Exit 40 (Pierrepont Manor) are two rest stops, one on each side. Pull into the appropriate rest stop* depending on which day you are there! Get out, stretch your legs, grab a cup of coffee and sign the guestbook! Then go check out the old fire truck and the generator that powers this operation! The letterbox is just sitting behind the big black toolbox tucked in a shadow! Take it to a nearby table and enjoy your cup of coffee!
*This letterbox is only available when the coffee stop is operating!
For the holiday weekends 2006, the coffee stop will set up at 8am Friday in the northbound rest stop. On Saturday evening the coffee stop will be dismantled at 8pm and the letterbox will not be available until the next morning when the coffee stop is set back up again at 10am, this time in the southbound rest stop. The coffee stop will be torn down again Monday evening at 8pm and the box will become unavailable until the next holiday weekend!
MtnMan (Mick) organizes and runs the Coffee Stop and he knows about the letterbox. On the other hand, the volunteers manning the stop are unaware of it's existence! They are however accustom to the occasional interest in the generator and fire truck so your curiousity probably won't raise any suspicions, but be discreet in your retrieval and replacement nonetheless.
For safety's sake, please don't allow your children near the generator, because that would draw attention! And it should go without saying,... BUT...Please do not touch the generator and be careful around the cords!
If you missed the letterbox this trip, not to worry, it'll be back on another holiday!

For nearly thirty years the Mannsville Manor Rescue Squad and Fire Department have operated a coffee stop on Interstate 81 during the three major holiday weekends. Manned by community volunteers, the coffee stop is set up in the local rest stop on I-81. For the first two days the coffee stop is set up on the northbound side. It then is moved to the southbound side to serve the returning traffic for the next two days.
Many of our travellers have been stopping almost as long as we've been here, counting on us to
provide a respite on their journey through the North Country!
While the refreshments are provided free of charge, donations are helpful and cheerfully accepted to defray costs and support our worthy departments!
So...if your headed our way over the holiday weekend... stop in!
