Ease - Hard if from I-84; easy if from Hood River.
Wheelchair friendly: sorry, not this one.
Time Frame: All day hike from I-84; a couple hour drive/hike from Hood River.

This is a find to crow about that’s accessible from the Mt. Defiance/Starvation Creek Trail that climbs out of the gorge off of Interstate 84 or from the town of Dee, just south of Hood River.

From Mt. Defiance/Starvation Creek Trail… simply head to Warren Lake. The Starvation Creek Trail will take you right by it as you head west towards Mt. Defiance. You’ll have to detour east from the Mt. Defiance trail when it merges with the Starvation Creek Trail. No biggy though. The hike in is worth it!

From Hood River, drive the Dee Highway south of Hood River to the Dee junction where an old hard board mill used to be. Veer right, cross the bridge and veer right again at the fork. Continue right (north) at the next fork and follow that road, past orchards and over the bridge that spans the west fork of the Hood River. Continue on until the road turns to the gravel road (don’t turn down the hatchery driveway) NFD 2820. This is long, but scenic drive towards Mt. Defiance. Always keep an eye out, during the week, for log trucks!! Check out the many views as you head up, up, up. Don’t take any side roads (of which there are many). You’ll eventually come to a “T” in the road where you’ll head right (north onto NFD 2821) to the Warren Lake Trailhead (Trail 417). If you have the Falcon Guide book “Hiking the Columbia River Gorge”, see page 124.

On foot...Follow the Warren Lake Trail (417) a little over a mile (it will turn to Mitchell Point Trail 417) to Warren Lake. Follow the trail to the north side of the lake.

BOX CLUES… From either direction, find the spot on the north shore that you can access the water to wiggle your toes in. There are a couple of spots on the north side of the lake. You figure out which one!! There will be a few rough camp spots not too far from this spot. Turn your back to the lake and follow your compass point 40 degrees magnetic to a rotting stump about 30 paces up the hill. There behind the stump, under bark and forest duff, breakfast is served!!!
