"Your reason and your passion are the rudder and the sails of your seafaring soul. If either your sails or your rudder be broken, you can but toss and drift, or else be held at a standstill in mid-seas. For reason, ruling alone, is a force confining; and passion, unattended, is a flame that burns to its own destruction. Therefore let your soul exalt your reason to the height of passion, that it may sing; And let it direct your passion with reason, that your passion may live through its own daily resurrection, and like the phoenix rise above its own ashes.” Kahlil Gibran

I have to first of all put out a HUGE thanks to Kat who actually placed this box for me. There I was at Moab's Box the Rocks 2005, Phoenix all ready to go, and I got so busy hunting all the fabulous boxes in the area that I flat ran out of time to place my beauty myself before it was time to head back home to CO! Thank you Kat!

This is a microbox/regular box combination, a signature thing for me. The first box is a stamp and ink pad only with a proper box following with another stamp and a journal. I seriously think that she rises as my best stamp yet. Enjoy! These stamps are based on the beautiful artwork of a woman named Linda Ravenscroft. Please, take a minute to look at her art at wwww.lindaravenscroft.com. In addition to the fabulous "Phoenix Rising", "Dark Eyes" is another one of my favorites.

And now for the clues!

This box is up Kane Creek Blvd. Go south on Main Street and turn right when you get to the corner with Burger King and McDonald's. Go down this street hugging it to the left when you come to a y in the road. Now the road will start to hug the cliffs on the left and will travel out along the Colorado River. Follow the road a couple of miles and take note when you leave the paved section. This next section is not paved, but is graded for 2 wheel drive vehicles. You will cross a cattle guard and it will turn to unpaved road. Follow the unpaved road as it turns left up the canyon away from the river. Now you are on a fairly straight section of road and far ahead you can see it take a sharp turn to the right. About 3/4's of the way down this straight section (before it turns right) look for a very small turnout on the left side of the road (cliffside). Park here and look for a faint trail going up through the rocks straight up to the cliffbottoms.

Box #1: As you climb up this steep hill, you will notice the first level area on the trail. The trail will veer slightly to the right from here. On the level trail, keep walking straight forward off the trail and look for AD 1985. On the left of the trail is a huge boulder several yards away. Box #1 is tucked under 1985. Place the first stamp towards the middle and top of your page. It really looks best if you ink the first stamp lightly and let it be light and a bit faded looking. The second stamp is fairly long and will drop down from the first. ...don't worry, it will make sense when you see them. ;) Return to the trail after stamping in.

Box #2: Back on the trail, continue up, up, ever up. (A boxer from Colorado has asked if I have some sort of fixation with cliffs, hmmmmm ...says Kat. Aljan says, the phoenix cried for a great height so that she may rise in all her glory). At the top you will come to a junction in the trail, the right turn will take you to a climbing spot, the left will take to your treasure. Go north along the wall. Things to look for: a lone lookout sheep, then a long zigzag snake, more sheep, one that met it's demise, and then onward for ten little indians. Look under a pile of rocks at the bottom of Chief Bigfoot for your treasure. There are some marks on the back of the second stamp that will help you line it up with the first.

PLEASE, this is important stuff!! The glyphs in this area are not easily seen, so very few people know that they exist. They have not been vandalized in any way, which is soooo rare in a spot 100 yds from a road! PLEASE DO NOT touch them! The oils in our skin will shorten their lifetime in the desert varnish. Please STAY ON THE TRAIL up there so you don't damage the cryptobiotic soil. The wild flowers up there are amazing right now! (mid May)
