UPDATE: June 2008 Due to flooding, it would be very unlikely this box is still in it's place. We would recommend that you assume this box is gone.

This is a short fun hike for families and should take about half an hour or less. UPDATE: We hid Herbie in the early Spring in pleasant weather and found this hike to be very enjoyable. However, we have had reports that in the summer months, mosquitos are particularly fierce. We wanted to make others aware of this since we wanted this to be a good family hike. Therefore, plan your Herbie visit accordingly or take precautions to fend off the mosquitos.

Herbie Beaver is the Reedsburg Beavers mascot and was named after Herbert Webb. As 1982(KDkadiddlehopper) and 1983(Mrs. Puddlejumper) Reedsburg High School graduates, we attended the High School located on the north end of Webb Avenue, adjacent to Webb Park and it was called Webb High. The High School has since moved to a new location and the Middle School is now in the old High School building. If you drive past the new Reedsburg Area High School located on South Albert Avenue heading South from Reedsburg towards Loganville on Hwy. 23 or if you do an internet search, you will find that the current version of the Herbie Mascot is different than the one depicted in our stamp. In our day, Herbie was cute, fun-loving and wore a sailor's hat. However, it was decided Herbie needed to look tougher and not so cute, therefore his image was re-created. On your hunt today, you will be walking back in time to find a nostalgic Herbie.

Begin your search at the Roger Popple Nature Center Trail Head located behind the Reedsburg Municipal Swimming Pool, in Webb Park on Webb Avenue in Reedsburg. There is a small parking area behind the pool.

Begin by walking towards the map located at the trail head. You may notice fish jumping from Half Moon Lagoon. We think it is helpful to hand draw a map for reference, but that is up to you.

Walk on down the trail and on past the sign that points you down the trail that leads you to the Monument. If you are interested, the Timber Monument was erected Dec. 31, 1976 and contains a time capsule to be opened 100 years later on July 4, 2076. The Monument itself is rather unexciting, but can be viewed from the bridge on Main Street as well.

Having walked on past that sign, continue on the path you are on until you arrive at a triangle of sorts where the trail meets the Wood Duck Trail. Stay left, continuing on just a short distance further to cross the bridge to the Hay Meadow Trail. Stay to the left on the Hay Meadow trail and you will find yourself on a pleasant footpath that makes a loop around as it first follows the River and then eventually winds right to make the loop back.

Once you begin to loop back, notice first one and then two spots where the trail divides. Both times stay left, but at the second divide begin counting off 30 steps. There take a compass reading of 160 degrees and walk 15 steps in that direction. You will find Herbie snuggled in the east side of the tree.

After stamping in and hiding Herbie safe and warm again, return to the trail and continue on your way. If you missed Herbie and instead come to Kleeber's Well, you will know you have gone too far. Not far after Kleeber's Well you will find a small metal bridge crossing Hay Creek. Take that over to the Wood Duck trail, where you will find a bench and then turn right. The Wood Duck Trail will soon meet at the triangle you first saw from the the original trail you took from the trail head. At this point you will be able to see the pool across Half Moon Lagoon and your vehicle should be in sight as well.
