This is one of a series of boxes being placed at interstate rest areas to make a traverse of Big Sky country more fun for letterboxers. Theme for the series is Montana's state symbols. This mini-box honors our state tree, the Ponderosa Pine.

The Ponderosa Pine is one of our most abundant tree species. It is very important to the forestry industry being used for door & window framing, for paneling & for furniture. The mature tree has a distinctive orange-brown bark.

This is a mini-box in a M & M container (green) so only room in the log for a small stamp.

Box is hidden at the southbound rest area between mile markers 179 & 178 just north of the Jefferson City exit on I-15. Take the concrete sidewalk to the northern most picnic tables. From the farthest north edge of the sidewalk continue 50 steps north out the little ridge to a large double trunked pine tree. At its base under rocks & needles you'll find the box.

Stamp replaced 9/1/13.
