UPDATE: 04/15/06 To our disappoint while checking on these boxes, we could not find any trace of the first box-The Gingerbread Man. Someone must have left the oven door open. 2/15/07 The Fox is also missing now. Until we can chase down the Gingerbread Man/Fox or replace them, please consider him MISSING.
This short series of 2 boxes is located north of Reedsburg on Hwy. V in the Hartje Learning Center. This would be an easy, enjoyable hunt for families and would take less than an hour. This location is used for local Cross Country meets and therefore we thought it would be fun to place the Gingerbread man here on his Cross Country run.
On Hwy. V locate the Harje Learning Center parking lot on the right side of the road about 6 miles north of Reedsburg. Start at the trail head which leads directly to the Amphitheater and Classrooms. In this area you will find a large wooden, hand carved/painted map. We strongly suggest you hand draw a rough copy of this map for this hunt.
Begin your hike by heading right from the map, walking past the bathrooms to a large clearing. At the clearing veer left to follow the tree line along the Turkey Track. Continue along until the trail divides at the Whitetail Ridge sign and go right up the slope.
Enjoy the hike as you follow Whitetail Ridge past the Highland Maple trail intersection staying to your right. As you go up a hill you will notice the 1K sign on the left of the trail and then the short cut trail on your left as well. You will also spy a map sign on the right and the Runners Ridge trail going to the right. Stay on Whitetail Ridge.
Locate the 1.25K marker sign and take a compass reading of 220 degrees where you will locate the "oven" where the Gingerbread man hides just 15 steps away. Please be careful he doesn't jump out and get away, tucking him back inside safe and warm out of sight.
Oops! He is quick isn't he! Run, Run fast as you can! You can't catch him.....he got away off down the trail! Follow him on down the Whitetail Ridge trail until the trail Ts with a house in front of you. Go right, he must be heading for the tunnel!
Run until you see the sign for the Woodchuck Trail and head right and then left onto the Tunnel Trail that will cross the Woodchuck trail at an angle on the other side of the loop. Head down the slope, where you will wind to the left at the bottom. At this point the tunnel will be in view.
Pass through the tunnel quickly to keep pace with this elusive little fella. On the other side of the tunnel you will find a second parking lot. Head in that direction, taking a left towards the Picnic Pavillion and Bathrooms. At the pavillion, take a right, going a short distance to the Meyers Meadow sign, where you will then turn left.
Hurry on down this trail until you see the Barred Owl Loop sign and then go right. From the Barred Owl Loop sign walk off 40 steps to a fallen Birch on the right. Walk another 40 steps and sight a fallen log to the west. Leaving the trail walk 50 steps west towards the fallen log and there you will discover what became of the Gingerbread Man.
After stamping in, return to the trail and follow along in the direction you were going. This trail will quickly loop back towards the tunnel. Once back on the other side return up the slope staying to the right until it curves left where you will see the house again. Walk towards the house and on past it to reach the parking lot where you left your "boxing-mobile".
While in the area consider visiting the quick 400 Trail drive by box and the Herbie box, both located in the City of Reedsburg. Rock Springs is not too far away either!
