The area of this letterbox is rich in history. You will find yourself traveling through the Silver Valley. Traveling east from Fourth of July Pass you will pass by Cataldo, Kingston, Pinehurst, Smelterville, and Kellogg. If traveling from Look-Out Pass west, your will travel past Mullan, Wallace, and Osburn. Your journey will take you to Big Creek. You will want to take exit 54 to get off I-90. The letterbox is up this canyon, past the Sunshine Mine. You will turn right after exiting I-90 coming from Fourth of July, but left if your coming from Look-Out and travel up the road through the Big Creek Community. Cross over Big Creek on a small bridge and continue on past The Sunshine Mine. It is no longer in operation, but is still an awesome site. Continue on and you will cross another small bridge over Big Creek. The road does turn to gravel and you will see how it widens at a spot about 1/2 mile from the mine site. When you see this widening, it would be a good place to stop and park. Letterbox is close to this road. When you see two posts and a frame that use to hold a National Forest sign you are almost there. The letterbox is directly across the road from this sign holder. Take 20 steps across the road from the sign post. You will need to look under an old object that looks like part of the road side. At one time in it’s life it used the road, but now is becoming part of the scenery. As you face this object the letterbox is just under it to your right. No need to lift anything.
Hope you enjoy your journey here to find this letterbox, to see some history, and to remember something that should never be forgot.
While you are in this area try to stop by the statue just off I-90 at this exit. Kellogg and Wallace also have Museums that are well worth the stop. God bless.
