THIS LETTERBOX IS DEAD. I WAS INFORMED ON 7/31/09 THAT THE BOXES HAVE BEEN DESTROYED.
Krug Park is located in the northwest corner of St. Joseph, off of St. Joseph Ave. Drive into the park and turn right onto the road that winds around the park. Remain on the road until you reach the top of the hill at the back of the park. At the top of the hill there is a parking lot on your right. Park in the far southwest corner of the parking lot, in front of the donkey pens.
Box # 1
Take the path towards the donkey pen. Jesse James, the infamous bank robber, began his illicit career in Missouri. Poor, with not much capital to start his venture, he robbed his first bank in Liberty, Missouri, riding a donkey similar to the ones you’re looking at in the donkey pen. He barely escaped that first attempt. One of his men, riding his donkey, was shot and killed. This is a little known fact.
When you reach the pen, walk along the fence line to the left. The fence will take a turn to your right, and there is a gravel road that runs parallel to it. Take the road into the woods.
Shortly, a dirt path will cross the road. Follow the path to the right. When you find a mulch covered path on your left, take it. Go past the rocks that cover the path. On the left you'll see a tree growing on a pile of moss-covered rocks. Go 25 more steps, into the clearing. On the left is a small tree with a pile of rocks at the base. Behind it is the stump of a fallen tree. Ten feet behind that is a large tree that used to lean ominously to the south, but has since fallen over. At the base of that tree, under a pile of cement rocks, is a hollow with your treasure. Your reward, should you find it, is a replica of the gun Jesse used to shoot his ass. With his ill-gained profit, he bought a real horse.
Box # 2
Re-trace your steps back to the dirt path and continue in the same direction you were going. You will pass a big dead tree lying on the left side and soon your path will curve to the left. Keep following it up the hill. Keep following the windy path until you exit the woods. Once you exit the woods and are in the beautiful clearing. Turn right (east) and walk along the edge of the woods. You will pass five large rocks on your left, and four large rocks on your right. Look for a tree on your left and a pile of small rocks on your right. After that you should find two large rocks on your left. Stand between the two large rocks, facing south, and walk back into the woods on the path in front of you. This should be just east of the small pile of rocks.
Shortly after you re-enter the woods, there is a less traveled path that veers to the right. Following it, take 12-13 steps until you see a pile of logs on your left. Under the 2 shorter logs, buried under sticks, is what you are looking for. Your prize is a replica of Jesse’s new horse.
