THE CELEBRATION RESERVOIR LOOP

.This is a hike of about 2 miles on the wonderful Mattabesett Trail. Lobsta Lady and The Lady and the Whippet joined me to help plant these boxes. This is in honor of my special friend’s birthday . We know her as Sadie , the other half of Sadie and Russ ! Happy Birthday and enjoy the celebration of a great hike.
On Brooks Road in Middletown, find where the Mattabesett Blue Trail Crosses over Brooks Road. Park in a small pull off on the south side of the road just across from the reservoir dam. The State No Trespassing signs are for the reservoir and no hunting or fishing is allowed... Hiking on the Mattabesett Trail is allowed. The beginning of this loop begins about 100 feet or more west from where the car is parked ~ and across the street. This is a blue blazed trail , half way around you will meet with a blue/yellow trail for the return which completes the clockwise loop .
Cross the street and enter the trail at a double blazed telephone pole. The trail goes north and gradually ascend to a view of the reservoir on the right. This is a lovely hike of great rocks full of white quartz and mica. The trail twists and turns and surprises you with wonderful views. Very soon you crest a short climb to a large rock, notice twin sister~ sister trees on the right. Just past the double twin trees , look on the reservoir side of the trail for a small mossy- quartz - ledge. The Shy Deer is hiding there.
Continue on and pass into a high and lovely pine grove, a nice place to rest and have a snack.
Soon cross a woods road and climb up the Rock Pile with views towards Hartford. Down you go and then up the next climb to a view of Powder Ridge and beyond to the west. These are short climbs and well worth the views. Down off the ridge and back on the trail you soon come to the junction of the blue and blue/ yellow. Take the Blue/yellow trail as it travels back to more views of the reservoir and will finally take you to your car.
When the blue/yellow trail turns sharply to the left, and the reservoir is now in sight, stop here. Go off trail a short way to the right and up onto rocks overlooking the water. A nice place to sit. Reach behind the large flat rock to find a Loon resting there under rocks.
We had lunch here, a nice place to visit.
Continue on the trail and pass a small swamp or two, an old quarry pit, laurel tunnels large rocks and old cut logs. Back on the road, turn right to the car. I hope this was a nice celebration for you.
