This letterbox search will take you on a very easy, short walk through a delightful little park on the ridge above Gualala, a friendly town right on Highway One in Mendocino County. It's a family-friendly park, with something fun for everyone, so bring tennis rackets, baseball mitts, horseshoes, basketballs, roller skates or just a picnic lunch and time to watch the kids play at the playground. Save your bread crusts to feed to the ducks and geese. Be prepared for any weather. It may be sunny, rainy or socked in fog. Have fun!

At the south end of the town of Gualala head east on Old Stage Road. After about 2.75 miles, you'll see Bower Community Park on your left. Park in the south parking area. (If it's full, park in the other parking area and walk back.)

Enter the park and walk past the play structure and picnic area, heading clockwise on the path around the pond. You may want to stop off at the wooden gazebo that justs out over the pond to feed the ducks and geese. As you leave the fenced gazebo area, continue clockwise on the paved path. At the theater entrance, take the steps up to the playground.

From the bottom of the double slide, walk 45 paces straight ahead, passing between two Mutt and Jeff pines,(oops - time passes, things change, one is now a stump) to a narrow path through the brush. (The brush has been recently cleared. Look down. The path is clear and easy to follow.) Once you have gone through, you will see a broad dirt path. Take this path uphill about 60 paces. On your left you will see a stand of redwoods. Walk around to the back (west side) of the largest redwood. Step in. The letterbox in a zip lock bag is tucked away on the ground to your right against the inside of the trunk. No digging is required.

Let us know if you find it. (aubrey@mcn.org)
