I desperately need the help of a great riddle solver. I am afraid my husband is in grave trouble. He is a highly sought after freelance photographer who has built a reputation on his ability to capture the intimate moments of cultures around the world: fertility rituals, rites of passage, private religious ceremonies. He is a master at gaining the trust of those not accustomed to trusting. I will never know how many of the world’s secrets he has been allowed to witness, how many ancient societies have granted him access to their inner sanctums.

Two months ago my husband left for Turkey on a contract for a very famous national magazine (I’m afraid to say which one). He was to spend two weeks recording the travels of a group of gypsies he had befriended on a previous journey. From there he intended to move on to Egypt, where his assignment was to capture the contrasts in large cities between ancient tradition and modern influences of the West.

My husband does his best to notify me of his whereabouts when away, but the obscurity of his travels often leaves him without a means of communication. The last email I received was from the public library in Alexandria. There was nothing suspicious about the message, only a few vague comments on the success of the trip and a promise to be home within the week. That was over three weeks ago.

The magazine he was contracted through has no knowledge of his whereabouts. Egyptian police have investigated his hotel room. His belongings were still there but they offered no leads to explain his disappearance. It wasn’t until yesterday, while desperately rereading his seemingly meaningless email message for clues that I finally noticed an attachment. It contained a scanned image of a scrap of paper with this handwritten note:

“In Lincoln’s Land, On the Waterfront , near the library downtown. Turn your back on me photographing the river and wind your way until you must look both ways (cross carefully!). Continue past the patio. Veer right eventually to avoid traveling under bridge. In a dark place, right of the reddest in line. What ever you do, keep it closed!”

The handwriting was my husband’s, though hurried. I’m afraid he may have managed to get something smuggled into the states and he was trying to provide me with a secret way to find it. What ever it is, it may be the key to his disappearance. I am prepared to generously compensate anyone who contacts brigido1941@yahoo.com with information about what he has hidden.

Thank you so much,
Mrs. Wonder Lee LeBlanc

NOTE: My husband, like his photographs, is quite colorful. To understand his secret, you will likely need a variety of tools. Also, I have a feeling his warning to “keep it closed” refers to the object itself. I’m sure he placed what ever it is in an outer casing that is perfectly safe to open.
