This is a simple loop hike at the top of Bear Mountain. Park near the Perkins Memorial Tower.
Halfway between the tower and the overlook to its south there is a plaque on a rock. Begin hiking "north" on the white-blazed Appalachian Trail here. As you go down the mountain, you will cross a road near the picnic area signs. The trail continues downhill and crosses the same road again.
The next time you come to the road, the trail turns right and follows it. When you reach the loop in the road, the trail continues to the right, through the rocks, following an old woods road.
When the AT leaves the road to the left, do not follow it, but continue on the woods road around the south side of the mountain. Take note of the stonework on either side of the road. There are buttresses built of stone here and there on the right to help hold the rocks in place. You will come to a spot where there is a group of four of these. Pass them. Just to the right of the next buttress a birch tree is leaning out over the trail. Behind the tree, under the big slab of rock, is what you seek.
:::Please rehide the box very carefully, as it is very close to the trail. Look back at it from further along the trail to check your work:::
Continue on the woods road, which from this point on is blazed in blue. (as if you could lose your way on a paved road??) When you reach its end, turn right and follow the AT again, as it follows the road up the mountain. WATCH FOR CARS! The trail runs along the right side, then the left for a while, then crosses the road again and leaves the road. A short climb brings you back to the Perkins Tower.
(Option for those who can't climb: start at the loop and return there)
