Moxlie Creek Letterbox

Placed by the Spanielbobbers (Bob, Julie, and our Springers- Mitsy and Rolf)- our very first letterbox plant!

Location- Olympia’s Watershed Park- a very nice wooded area nearby downtown Olympia. The park is of course dog-friendly!

Directions to the park from I-5- take the Port of Olympia exit and turn left onto Henderson Rd. There is a small parking lot on the left side of the road at the main park entrance.

Clues:
Start from the parking lot and walk up the hill along Henderson Rd appx ¼ mile to the new trailhead near Eskridge Dr. This is a brand new trail that opened in 2005. Start on the trail and enjoy the beauty of this pristine forest near the bustling city of Olympia. As you walk along you will see a bench on the right. Further on you will see a large treehouse on the right. The trail will soon turn to the left and descend down hill into the forest. Another bench can be found near the Moxlie Spring Basin. Soon the trail will meet the main trail in the park. Stay to the right and continue on about 32 steps. Bob and I had an argument about whether we should say paces or steps but since I am writing the clues I win out and say steps. On the right side of the trail there will be a very interesting cedar tree with two small maple trees growing in front of it. This cedar tree is actually growing out of an old stump that is almost rotted away. On the backside of the tree there is an old pipe fitting with a root growing through it. Bob says that the pipe fitting was part of the old Olympia water system. He should know, his grandfather, Tom Polhaus, was a city employee in the 1920’s who helped maintain the water system here. Beneath this pipe fitting between a pair of roots is the letterbox covered in debris. After stamping in you can continue along the main trail back to the parking lot.

This is the first letterbox that we have placed and we (and the dogs) had a lot of fun making and placing it. But we are not sure if we have done it quite right since we have only been letterboxing ourselves for about 2 months and have only found 4 boxes and have not really met anyone else who is into the sport yet. If anyone tries to look for this box we would really appreciate you letting us know if you found it or if our clues are off. Please contact us at miles_archer_pi@yahoo.com
