THIS BOX IS PROBABLY MIA, AS OF JANUARY 2006.

Doctor Who was a science-fiction television show aired by the British Broadcasting Corporation from 1963-1989, and aired in America in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s by many PBS stations. This show was a very important part of my childhood. In early 2005, the BBC began airing new Doctor Who episodes for the first time in sixteen years (not counting a one-off joint production with FOX television in 1996). In honor of this exciting moment in sci-fi television history, I’ve carved a series of nine Doctor Who letterbox stamps, and scattered them all over southeastern Pennsylvania.

The most unique thing about Doctor Who is that the lead character, known only as “the Doctor,” has been played by nine different actors over the years. As a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, the Doctor has the ability to regenerate when faced with death. His appearance and personality change significantly whenever this happens. Each of my Doctor Who letterboxes is in honor of one of these distinct Doctors (known as “the First Doctor,” “the Second Doctor,” and so on). Each stamp contains the logo in use during that Doctor’s tenure, an image appropriate to that Doctor, and another image from the show in general. Fans of the show should recognize all these images; they may seem quite odd to others!

The general format of the show is rather simple. In most stories, the Doctor (and one or more companions) would arrive in his space/time ship (called the TARDIS) on some planet or other, then solve a problem or two, and leave again at the end of the story. In keeping with this style, the clues for my Doctor Who letterboxes start at other, already planted letterboxes.

To find the Eighth Doctor, begin at “BOLTS,” in the Bolts ’n Holes series by B & E. From Bolts, go back to the second bridge. Cross it, and turn right. Walk past a small “amphitheatre” on your left, and up some steps. A huge dead tree lies along the left side of the trail. Look in its base for the Doctor.

This stamp includes an image of the seal of Rassilon. This was a frequently-seen image from the Doctor’s home world, Gallifrey. The eighth Doctor was only on television once, in a special TV movie produced by the BBC and FOX television. In that telemovie, the seal of Rassilon was seen a lot. The stamp also includes an image of the sonic screwdriver, a tool the Doctor often used to open doors, cut through walls, and more. Make sure you record the number you find on the box…it’ll be necessary to find the Ninth Doctor.
