Doctor Who was a science-fiction television show aired by the British Broadcasting Corporation from 1963-1989, and aired in America in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s by many PBS stations. This show was a very important part of my childhood. In early 2005, the BBC began airing new Doctor Who episodes for the first time in sixteen years (not counting a one-off joint production with FOX television in 1996). In honor of this exciting moment in sci-fi television history, I’ve carved a series of nine Doctor Who letterbox stamps, and scattered them all over southeastern Pennsylvania.

The most unique thing about Doctor Who is that the lead character, known only as “the Doctor,” has been played by nine different actors over the years. As a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, the Doctor has the ability to regenerate when faced with death. His appearance and personality change significantly whenever this happens. Each of my Doctor Who letterboxes is in honor of one of these distinct Doctors (known as “the First Doctor,” “the Second Doctor,” and so on). Each stamp contains the logo in use during that Doctor’s tenure, an image appropriate to that Doctor, and another image from the show in general. Fans of the show should recognize all these images; they may seem quite odd to others!

The general format of the show is rather simple. In most stories, the Doctor (and one or more companions) would arrive in his space/time ship (called the TARDIS) on some planet or other, then solve a problem or two, and leave again at the end of the story. In keeping with this style, the clues for my Doctor Who letterboxes start at other, already planted letterboxes.

To find the Second Doctor, start at Natty Bumppo’s “Battle of the Bands – The Police” box. From the Giant Squid, continue 16 paces up the trail. Look to your right. There is an uprooted tree with a large uprooted root system. The Second Doctor is in the root system, on the ground, in the middle, behind some rocks.

This stamp includes an image of the Second Doctor’s recorder, which he played from time to time. It also includes an image of an Ice Warrior, one of a Martian race the Doctor met several times. Make sure you record the number you find on the box…it’ll be necessary to find the Ninth Doctor.
