Last Spring, my daughter, Papillon, and I took a short trip to Bloomington, Minnesota over her spring break, to take her shopping at Mall of America. Now I am not a shopper, and I abhor malls, so I needed something else to do in the area. I had heard of letterboxing several years ago, but never acted on it, since there weren’t many boxes near my home. Something (I don’t remember what) brought it to my attention again. I started researching clues and discovered there was a box not a half-mile from MOA.

The rest, they say, is History.

This year, we planned a trip to the Florida Keys over break, so of course I researched boxes in that neck of the woods. At the last minute, however, plans were changed, and our trip cancelled. Papillon and I headed back to Minnesota, and I celebrated my first anniversary as a letterboxer where it all began, at the Minnesota Valley Wildlife Refuge, where I planted a box of my own. (Once you see the stamp, you’ll understand why I included this little bit of info concerning Florida.)

BYOM (markers): suggested colors: green, blue, & brown.
A pretty good grade downhill (uphill back to your car!); hike itself is simple and level.
Kid, dog & bike friendly; strollers could probably handle most of it.

Clues:

Refer to DebRock’s clues for "Minnesota Valley – Bass Ponds". See, there’s a reason this box qualifies for my “Fish Out of Water” Series! Read her history of the area, and park where she says.

At the base of the hill, pass the shelter and the “dangerous water sign” on the main path. Cross over either of the twin bridges and follow the path alongside the stream. Cross the long bridge and look at the base of the tree that makes a “U turn”. Seal the box well and make sure it is well hidden. Unfortunately Deb’s two boxes are MIA, and I’d hate for mine to have the same fate, especially since it’s an awful long haul for me to go replace it!

Drop me a line and let me know how my box is faring!

A special thanks to the wonderful letterboxers of Minnesota for boxsitting for me the other 364 days of the year when I’m not visiting the Bass Ponds!
