A Birch Grove in the woods and a Loon on a quiet Pond are yours if you select this pleasant little hike just a few miles from the booming metropolis called Bangor, the gateway to eastern Maine.

Directions from Bangor

Cross any of the 3 bridges over the mighty Penobscot into Bangor’s twin city of Brewer. From the eastern shore of the Penobscot drive approximately 5 miles south on Route 1a, then proceed right onto the Copeland Hill Road. Drive for about 1 mile to the intersection with the Wiswell Road. Bear right on the Wiswell road and travel about 3/4 of a mile to the Fields Pond Road. Take a left onto the Fields Pond Road and drive until you find the Maine Audubon Society Fields Pond Nature Center in Holden (free of charge). For your convenience we have included a scanned copy of the trail map.

CLUES

From the parking lot proceed to the trail map box directly behind the Nature Center. (A trail map will be useful but not essential.) From the trail map box walk along the main gravel path that leads into the woods. When you see the sign for the Ravine Trail stay to the right on the main trail and cross the brook (this brook may have running water during the spring & summer). Proceed up the stone steps. Proceed down the Brook Trail on a 300º compass heading (northwest or if you don't have a compass turn right) . After about 100-120 paces you will find yourself in a small birch grove. In the middle of the birch grove, face due west. 5 paces due west of the trail you should see a large rock. At the base of the western side of the large rock you will find your prize underneath a moss covered rock. (Note: In August a wasp surprised a letterboxer!)

After you find your prize in the birch grove continue along the Brook Trail to the intersection with the Lakeshore Trail (about 1/2 mile). Bear southwest on the Lakeshore Trail and hike about 175 - 200 paces, at which time you should see a trail heading to the right down to the pond. The main trail should head uphill into the woods away from the pond. Instead of heading up the hill, turn right and walk approximately 35 paces down to the pond . You will see two stone benches resting against 2 large Pine trees. Facing the pond, locate and sit on the northern bench. Look to the northeast and you should see a Fir tree several feet away. At the base of the tree you will find your Loon prize.

We hope you enjoy the hike as much as we do!
