Western Hills Viaduct
Placed by: Crappiefisher
Location: Fairview Park, Cincinnati OH
Box Type: Micro box, no pen or ink pad.
Number of boxes: 1
Difficulty: Very easy. No hiking involved. A quick find. There's a small park just up the road to reward the little ones.

I'VE REMOVED THE BOX. THANKS TO ALL WHO VISITED! 9-6-06

I work near the Western Hills Viaduct and have driven over it hundreds of times. Each time I'm amazed that a structure this old is still being used as heavily as it is.

To find this box you will need to travel to Fairview Park in Cincinnati, OH (Take Central Parkway to McMillan. The entrance to the Park is a quick right turn off of McMillan after the second traffic light as you travel up the hill.) Park your vehicle across from the first lookout point that you come to. Walk down the center of the area right up to the walkway. Take time to admire the view.
The rail yard is directly in front of you. Western Hills Viaduct is to your right.

While you are looking, continue rotating your head until you are looking behind your right shoulder. There is a tree surrounded by some bushes. The Western Hills Viaduct stamp is located there underneath a few pieces of stone.

Be careful! This park is well used at lunch time and by local joggers. Also, replace the small piece of plastic that lines the bottle to prevent water-logging. (an experiment).

Take the time to look out over the city, then traverse a little further down the street to another lookout. When you come to the end of the road, turn right to get back to Central Parkway, then turn right again on Central Parkway to find your way back to the highway.

Please email me at crappiefishergirl@... and let me know what you think!

Here's a little history on the Western Hills Viaduct:
The Western Hills Viaduct is Cincinnati's largest viaduct and one of the city's most distinctive structures. It is twice as long as any of the Ohio River bridges and has as much character as several of them put together.
The viaduct was built from 1930-32 as part of the massive Union Terminal project as a replacement to the archaic Harrison Ave. Viaduct (1908). Either end of the 2,800ft. double-decked portion is marked by arch spans, the east arch over Spring Grove Ave. and the western over the Mill Creek.
The viaduct would benefit greatly from the rehabilitation and recognition as the historical asset that it is. Nevertheless, the viaduct is so large and well-built that it will probably live to see its 100th birthday in 2032 and might carry on for years after that.
