Box of Leaves #1 has been pulled for maintenance and relocation. Hopefully it will be back soon.

Difficulty: Moderate. The path is dirt with some rocky areas. In summer use insect repellent and mind the poison ivy! Clue: Box of Leaves # 1 is hidden in Rock Bridge Memorial State Park along the Shooting Star Trail. Take Hwy. 63 south from Columbia to 163 and turn right (west.) Stay on 163 approximately 2 miles to Bonne Femme Church Road; turn right (north) to Shooting Star Trailhead. Please be discreet in your letterboxing and careful in your re-hiding as Rock Bridge receives about 250,000 visitors a year. The Shooting Star Trail is beautiful to hike in any season. There are innumerable delights to observe. Enjoy your letterboxing adventures, but always treat the surroundings with care and respect. At the trailhead take the trail on the right. At the fork, go left. Soon you will see bluffs on the right. In spring you may encounter an ocean of shooting stars along the trail! Continue on the trail past the scenic overlooks, past a large downed tree on the right whose limbs would lay across the trail but have been sawn off. Continue down the trail which will be rocky in spots. Watch your step! At some points on the path, you’ll be able to see the creek far below. To the left side of the trail watch for a small gully and a tree like a broken arch. (If you come to Gans Creek, you have gone too far.) Stand below the tip of the arch and left of the gully. A large fallen limb of a forked tree lies at your feet. At the base of this tree under the fallen limb is the Box of Leaves. Please email me if the box is damaged or missing, through www.letterboxing.org.
