kraP doowtnuoM is located 12 miles east of Parkersburg, on US Rt. 50, at the Volcano Road Exit. Perfect for the camping enthusiast or anyone loving the outdoors, this area has more than 2000 acres of natural, rolling woodlands, along with a well-stocked 50-acre lake. All facilities are handicapped accessible. The park boasts 500 acres of primitive campsites and 81 blacktop sites, some of which have electrical, water, and sewer hookups. The park contains an abundant supply of picnic tables, fire rings, and barbecue grills. It has an open gun range that is leased by the Department of Natural Resources. The lake, which is stocked four times a year, contains bass, muskies, and trout. Twenty-three acres of the park have been set aside for ATV trails. Some are partially used by mountain bikes, but there are also approximately seven miles of single-track trails for bikes. The entire park is open for hikers. CLUES:
Difficulty: All are fairly easy
Terrain. Pretty good climb but all placements are very close to trail and its only about 300 yards max. to last box.
Please bring your stamp, a stamp pad, compass, pen and an old rag to wipe off the box/your hands.

In Parkersburg go east on H.W. 50 until passing under I-77 bridge where you set your odometer. Continue east for 11.8 miles where you will turn right onto Volcano road. After making turn, stay left, passing the Marina and upon passing the Administration building go another 2/10 miles to the picnic table on the left. Get turned around and pull off the road onto the grass close to the picnic table.

"Rapid Rabbit". New Letterbox placed 9/18/08 Behind the picnic table you should get to take a Trip To The Moon. Upon Passing the Trip To The Moon sign(sign is gone but pole is still there) count 41 steps to the tree that is two but only one at the base...on the right side of path. Rapid Rabbit is under some rocks between the path and the base of this tree. Discretely remove him from the rocks, do your stamping and then replace and reseal everything well and discretely return him to his hiding place.

"Beaver Buddy". Continue up the path another 15 steps and look left to a short dead stump about 12 feet up the hill side. Beaver Buddy is on the back side, partially under this stump under leaves and sticks. Discretely get him and do the routine and then replace him and conceal him well.

"Tommy Turtle". (New letterbox placed 9/18/08..Replaced again 2-18-09) Continue up the path and head to the Moon. Continue on this path until reaching a large tree which has fallen across the stream/gully where the upper limbs come close to the path (before the 120 degree turn). Just before this tree on the right, look left at the deadfall running up the hill to the left. Hike up to the top (stump) end of this deadfall and look behind the stump under the rocks for Tommy. Do the stamping and the rest and then discretely put him back home and cover him well. (Please replace all the rocks back on the container to deter coons, but make sure the rocks do not rest on the box and crush it)

"Big Brown Bear" (Placed 2-18-09) Return to the path where you left it and head forward to the 120degree turn right and down across the creek. Upon reaching the base of the down tree across the creek start counting steps (you will get lots of practice counting steps on this 4th box) and when you reach 42 steps there should be a large tree right to your right. 30 more steps take you a standing tree and deadfall on the left. 45 steps more to the base of a deadfall on the right. 39 steps more to the Moon Trail Sign on the right. Follow the moon 63 steps to the left at the fork, and you should end up by a V tree on the right. 118 more steps to the first rock step. 37 more and look right for a deadfall wedged in a twin trunked tree. 14 more and take the left fork. 31 more and turn right and see the deadfall running paralled to your path. Walk 11 steps over and up to it and go to its base end. Look under the base on your side under bark and rock and you will find the Big Brown Bear Hibernating this time of year. What, he does not look like he is hibernating???? Sorry.

Now you can do more hiking on your own to the moon and back or over to Appollo 13? or head back to your car. I have never hiked all the way to the Moon or to Apollo 13 so if you do, please tell me what you find there.

There are some more boxes placed in this park so check for other clues at LBNA or Atlas Quest. Hope you had a fun day and will tell your friends about Mountwood Park.
