In May of 1950, a human-caused fire ravaged 17,000 acres of forest in the Capitan Gap of New Mexico, and it was during this fire that a tiny bear cub with badly burned feet was found by one of the fire fighters. While being nursed back to health he was given the name Smokey Bear, and soon became a star by appearing on posters everywhere about fire prevention. He lived the rest of his life at the National Zoo in Washington D.C., but when he died in 1976, he was flown back to his birthplace of Capitan, New Mexico and buried in Smokey Bear Park. For a small fee you can come here to pay your respects to Smokey, and find this microbox.

Directions:
Capitan is about 70 miles west of Roswell via Hwy 380, and Smokey Bear Park is in the heart of town at 118 Smokey Bear Blvd.

Clues:
Find Smokey Bear's grave in the far northwest corner of the park and pay your respects. Walk east past Smokey's Grave site and find the "Riparian Area" sign. At the sign, look straight ahead to the tall Ponderosa Pine tree on the right. The camo microbox is located at the base of that tree, between the large rock and the tree. Please be discreet and re-cover well.
