History
Campus Martius, the original stockade, built on the square where the museum now stands, served from 1788 to 1796 as the site of the seat of government of the first U.S. territory outside of the 13 original colony-states. The fortress protected the settlers from hostile Indians, was the office for the Northwest Territory's first governor, Arthur St Claire, and was used as a site for Marietta's first court of law. The fortress was dismantled around 1796 and Rufus Putnam retained and converted his quarters to a Washington Street residence where the "Father Of Ohio" died in 1824. In 1933 the Ohio Historical Society enclosed the house in the Campus Martius Museum.

Please bring a stamp pad, your stamp, an old rag, gloves and a pen.
Difficulty: Easy
Terrain: Mostly flat walkways.
Distance: Best Guess is 100 yards max. to quest and back

Clues:
From downtown Marietta go northwesterly on Second Street until passing Washington Street. Make the next left at St. Claire street and then left again into the parking lot at the rear of the museum. If there are no parking places available there, note the historical marker for the land office and then find a place to park. Once you are parked, you might want to visit the museum. Anyway, return to that historical sign about the Land Office by the parking lot and stand on the northeastern side (side closest to 2nd st.) Take a heading of ~ 065* and take 10 steps to a brick wall with a shrub next to the wall. Between the shrub and the wall you will find the Campus Martius Museum letterbox. Discretely move the rocks aside and take the box somewhere to do the stamping . When done stamping, please reseal everything well and discretely return the box to its hiding place and conceal it well with the rocks.
