Marvin who has Marfans will be happy to guide you by telling you of his adventure.
He is soooo excited today because he gets to go on his first big walk since his recent heart surgery. It is raining, but that won't keep him inside. He is ready, although he will make sure to take it easy on the steep parts. It is a 2.8 mile walk with a 200 ft elevation gain (most of it is flat).
When he parked in the lot he was surprised to find out that it is now a fee area and it costs $2. With his back to the machine, he walked to the edge of the parking lot towards a Fire Hazard sign. He walked to the right and across a small wooden bridge. He passed a cute stone shelter, crossed the next bridge on his left and then the following bridge on his right. To the right of the picnic table was a strange looking double stump sticking straight out. He walked over to it and noticed that the stump to the right of that one had weird roots coming out of the top of it. There were some sticks and rocks placed under these roots as if to cover something. Curious, Marvin moved the rocks and found an adorable little box. Someone had named it "Loose Love".
He re-covered it and continued on by going back across the last bridge and then to the right. The hill turned to stairs that continued the steep ascent. He could hear his new metal heart valve ticking away as he climbed. He turned right at the end of the stairs and walked to the edge of the Lake. Aaaah...there was a bench near by to rest on for a minute. The rest and view of the lake was nice but soon he continued up to the left. After walking for a little while, he saw some wooden steps heading down on his right side. Why not, he thought, as he carefully made his way down to the lakes edge. He walked along the shore to the left. When he had a chance he looked into the water and saw his long narrow face and glasses looking back at him. Cute little ducks swam by. He walked on and eventually came to a tree branch on his left side that looked like a big handle. There was also a very short path that went up the hill for a couple of steps to another branch that was horizontal. He pulled himself up to it and looked under the left root. There, behind a couple of rocks, he saw something plastic. Carefully, he used his long spidery fingers to pull it out so he could see it better. Another cute box! When he looked inside he saw it was named "Healing Heart".
He carefully replaced it and continued on. After some more walking he saw a big rock and a bench slightly up the hill. A perfect place for him to relax and eat his lunch, despite the rain. It was a little hard to hold the umbrella and eat, but it worked. When he was done he headed up that hill and turned right, back onto the main fire road. He passed by a gorgeous waterfall on his left. He was glad to be there in February when there was so much water although he was a little curious what it would look like in the summer. He will have to come back again. Shortly after the waterfall he came to a post showing him which way to go to get to Gertrude Ord Trail. Sigh....more stairs. Slowly but surely, his long legs and big feet carried him to the top of the stairs. When the path started to go a little downhill, he stopped and leaned against a tree that was on the lake side. He caught his breath while checking out the mossy, 4 trunked odd-looking tree across from him on the hill. It was a few steps up off the trail, but he wanted to look inside. Peering over the edge of the tree stump and to the right, his eyes caught another glimpse of something like plastic under the overhang. Could it be another box??? Weird. It was covered by some leaves so he would have to remember to put them back when he replaced it. He took the box and continued on the trail for 13 steps until he found a log that was placed across the trail (the 1st one he had seen) to sit on. He looked into the box and found the name "Haphazard Heart". When he was done, he went back and carefully re-hid it. He also had to cover his footprint on the hill with some leaves so it would look natural again.
Continuing on, he came across several bridges and little waterfalls. He saw a long worm and several newts. He is sooo glad he didn't accidentally step on them! The path was even more curvy than his spine and it seemed to go on forever. It was very pretty. He was starting to wonder if there were other boxes that were hidden as well? He looked into occasional hollows in trees and under a few fallen trees, but nothing. On he went. Up ahead he could see the last bridge which went over the main stream and headed up to the fireroad. Overhead a small tree on the left had fallen across the path and pressed against the tree on the other side. That tree on the right was part of a cluster of trees near the stream. Marvin gave it one more try and looked into the center of that group of trees. Could there be a box in here? There was a large root on the left which would make a great hiding spot and there was a branch standing in front of it. Hmmm. He moved the branch and squatted down low. YES, he DID see something!! He couldn't believe it. What a great detective he was. He pulled it out and secretly checked out the contents. This one was called "Heartfelt". He saw a website mentioned in all of these boxes about letterboxing. He made a mental note to check out the website when he goes home because this sounded fun. He pushed the box back deep inside and covered it again.
It was time to head home. He crossed the last bridge and took a right. He was back on the fire road and he went to the right again to head back. He took a sip of water from the fountain on his way. He also sat down on the bench nearby to rest his weak arches. While looking out at the water, he remembered the turtles that he saw here a few times in the past. In the spring he even saw a big gopher snake. Today it was too rainy for that. He continued on the fire road, straight down. He noticed the new signs they had put up explaining the Mount Tamalpais Watershed and read the questions and answers for the fun of it. He continue down the big fire road all the way to the parking lot. What a great hike that was. Not too hard. Not too short or too long. It was just right.
