This box is in Pennypack Park near the Environmental Center. There are several other boxes near by (not mine) so you could make it part of a great day exploring this beautiful park. Pennypack Park offers miles of bike/hiking trails, as well as great glimpses of wildlife. The wildlife this box focuses on is of course, birds. Pennypack Park has such a diversity of bird life that John Audobon himself spent time studying the many species here. I have seen Woodpeckers, Blue Jays, Orioles, Geese, Ducks, Egrets, and Hawks here. They are plentiful and this clue takes you in an area where Park Management goes out of their way to attract a variety of species. Bring binoculars and extra time to sit.

Park in the lot for the Environmental Center (E.C.) on Veree Road.
On the West side of the E.C. is a bird blind to sit and look for birds in the feeding area. Worth a few minutes before or after the hunt.

Go to the NE side of the E.C. (still in the parking lot) and find the information sign. Read the sign about Thoreau.

Go toward the picnic tables and enter the trail keeping the tables on your right and the E.C. to your left and behind you. There are bird houses and feeders to your left at the E.C.

Hit the trail. You will come to a low fence on your left and Trail Post #1 on your left. Do not enter the trail that way. Stay straight keeping the old white house on your right.

You will come to a fork in the road and a rock in the center. Bear to your left and stay along the woodline.

Watch on your left for birdhouses put up by the Park. One of these looks very much like what you will find at the end of your search today.

Follow the path as it curves toward the left and down a hill. Stay on it until it brings you to dead end at a fenced in area. This fence protects the vegetation from the many deer in the park. Take the trail to the right at this point.

Soon you will come to a trail post on your left and a path that leads off that way. There will also be a small footpath to your right at this spot. You are near someone elses letterbox here, but definitely not right on top of it. You won't it find it without clues but if you have Joseph's Pennypack Park Series clue with you, you could make a small diversion here. Stay straight though, if you are continuing the Birdhouse hunt.

The creek should be off to your left. You will soon come to some wooden steps leading down to a small stone pond. A very nice place to sit and watch or listen for birds don't you think? If you are not stopping here, keep on keeping straight on.

Very soon the path will begin it's uphill portion of the hunt. Shortly beyond the half way point of the hill you can see a tree that was "Marked" in 1970. I wonder what Mark is doing now, 35 years later. You might have to walk backwards up the hill to see "Mark".

Just after the uphill stretch ends, you will see a small bench off to your left. Yet another great place to sit and watch or listen for birds. You see why you should have brought your binoculars now?

Back on the path, not too far ahead you will see a tree visited by KD and RM on the left. I wonder if they know Mark? Your next landmark is not too far ahead on the left.

Look for Ed's sign, and go sit where Mr. Levine would want you to sit.

Listen, look, find some birds. When you are done and can't wait any longer to get your reward, stand next to the smallest seat. Stand on it's West side. Facing the creek, find a bearing of 240 degrees. Head off in that direction, your treasure is dead ahead on that bearing. To help you find it's exact location, let me paraphrase a song by They Might be Giants:

I’m your only friend
I’m not your only friend
But I’m a little stamping friend
But really I’m not actually your friend
But I am

Big old dead tree on the hillside straight ahead now
It's huge, right over there
There's a little birdhouse in the hole
Not to put too fine a point on it
Look at the end where roots were once on it
There's a little birdhouse in the hole

The treasure is well covered, please recover for the next person. Watch for muggles, although this is the horse path and less travelled than the bike path. Please let me know the condition of the box and that you enjoyed the hunt.

Have fun.
