UPDATED 2006!
My original letterbox has disappeared at the summit. I have placed its replacement in a new location.

This letterbox is rated a 2 for difficulty and a 3-4 for terrain on Silent Doug's rating system. It is 6.2 miles RT to the summit of Iron Mountain. The trail is rocky and steep, but well-maintained. Our Feb. hike was emerald green lined with blooming wild lilacs and every color wildflower imaginable. The mountain has recovered nicely from the wildfires of 2003. Our 6-year old and our dog both made it up and back, and we saw a couple of very muscular mountain bikers go up as well. Plan at least 3 hours RT. Take plenty of water.

CLUES:
The Iron Mountain trail is located at the intersection of Poway Road and Hwy 67. There is limited parking along the road. Don't leave valuables in your car, there have been break-ins here.

Take the oak-lined trail east until it connects with the Ramona Overlook trail. Enjoy the view. This used to be home to the Kumeyaay Indians. Go to the right and follow the trail toward the summit of Iron Mountain. At the 2 mile marker, go ten paces further on the trail to a large, smooth boulder on the left. To the left of the boulder is a crevasse where the box is wedged behind a bush and hidden with rocks. Poke around with your walking stick to make sure there are no snakes hiding in the shade.

This is right on the trail, so please be discreet so that nobody sees you retrieve & replace the box!

Keep going to the summit for a spectacular view. On a good day you can see Point Loma, the city of San Diego and the boats in the harbor. Iron Mountain also has a mailbox with a journal that hikers can log in. There are picnic tables and a viewing scope. Take a picnic in your day pack. It can be windy at times- you'll need a chin strap for your hat!

Send me an email if you find my box!
