Dr. Smith’s Letter Box Treasure-February

Just west of prominent Westlake High school in the beautiful Barton Creek Greenbelt you will find the Hill of Life Smith Falls letter box.

Exit west from Loop 360 (at Westbank Drive) onto Scottish Woods Trail.

Travel two tenths of a mile west until you find the marked trail head to Barton Creek Greenbelt and park your car.

Leisurely stroll down the “Hill of Life” path to the flowing waters of Barton Creek.

This is a wide but rocky path.

Choose proper hiking shoes with with good support on a clear day before attempting this.

The walk is about 15 minutes to the bottom and about a 250 foot elevation drop.

Keep right as you travel under electrical lines as the path forks.

Once you hear the flowing waters, you will see a large triangular intersection and go left.

The sound will take you to the water’s edge and to the first falls.

Turn right and travel west along the water’s edge between the “His and Hers’ large oak trees, taking the left fork.

The “Hers” oak tree on your left is decorated in wild grape vines reaching to the top branches.

Travel some five minutes until you hear the roar of the second and much larger falls.

As you approach you will see a white beach on the south side of the falls and a single large oak standing to the right of the falls in an open area.

Standing at the base of the solo oak tree while facing east, put one hand on the tree trunk and stretch out your other hand.

There you will find the Hill of Life letter box located beneath your hand buried under a flat rock directly at your feet. Use the rubber stamp found in the box to mark a sheet from the spiral notebook and bring to the office for a special treat.

As you walk back up the path to your car, you will find out why they call this “The Hill of Life”. Take water on a hot day.
