2009 - Unable to find the box when visiting in April. Archiving in December 2009

Difficulty – fairly simple
Time – practically a drive up once you arrive at the parking area
Directions to starting place – K-156 to K-4 west. Look for a sign for Cheyenne Bottoms on your left. If you come in from the other side of the reserve, make your way to the parking area north of pool 3A.

Details you should know – This is an incredible bird and wildlife preserve. You could spend a long time here hiking or bird watching from your vehicle. The web address is http://www.cheyennebottoms.net/. It’s well worth checking out before you visit.

Details you don't need to know, but might enjoy – The day I was there I saw 15-20 different kinds of birds, some I knew, some I’d never seen before.
From the web site – “This is most important ecosystem in Kansas and the most important migration point for shorebirds in North America. From 45% to 90% of various shorebird, geese and duck species stop at Cheyenne Bottoms. Over 100 species nest in the area and 63 species are permanent residents.”

Clues:
Do yourself a favor and either get a map from the website or stop at one of the information kiosks at Cheyenne Bottoms. Make your way to the first parking area at Redwing west above Pool 3A. Walk past metal pole with the pencil holder and the slot for money heading east along the jetty path for 7 paces (14 steps). Look left. Start checking under rocks. The box is located about ½ way between the gate and the location signs. Not that it really matters, but the stamp is my somewhat unskilled interpretation of a piece of a Thomas Hart Benton painting called Island Hay. Don’t blame him, blame me. And press hard.
