Permanently gone and retired. :-( KKO, 9.29.09

*** UPDATE: 10/25/05 I have found and recovered this box from it's 'accidental' location. Many thanks to the people who sent me hints on where they had seen it. I will replant this box on my next trip there. GreyCrazy ***

NOTICE: I've received an email from a kind geocacher who found this box OUTSIDE of the fence given in these directions. It sounds like someone has removed/tossed the box over the fence. :-( If you live in the area or are heading that way to find this box please let me know if you're willing to help search for it. The emailer said it IS in good condition....just not where it's supposed to be and I have a confirmed find less than two weeks ago. If you can help please email me at greycrazy1@yahoo.com. Planted September 26, 2004 in honor of BeachBound Hounds.

This should be a pretty easy box to find as long as you’re a dog lover.

Take Highway 17 Business south (King’s Highway), all the way through Myrtle Beach. You’ll find that the businesses slowly drop away and it feels like you’re driving out of town. Eventually you’ll see a helicopter company and landing area on your right, and a stop light ahead with a large convenience store on the left. In the recent past, this light marked the entrance to the Air Force Base. If you reach the entrance to the State Park you’ve gone too far. (Hint—you might want to box the park too!!)

Turn right at the light. Turn left at the first road possible named for a large ornamental grass found everywhere in the south.

Take the first left you see. You’ll be turning between a row of old base housing on the right and an open field with trees on the left.

A short distance down this road you’ll probably start seeing all the cars parked on the left because this is a very popular spot. You’ll notice a very large painted green fence enclosing a lovely spot with a pond, ducks, and a bunch of very happy dogs. Park anywhere it seems appropriate, as close as you can to all the rest of the cars.

There are two entrances to the Bark Park. Take the left-most gate that leads into the large area with the pond. You’ll probably be greeted almost immediately by a happy wet dog or two—be sweet to them and watch where you step!

Take a stroll around the right edge of the pond. You’ll be searching for a corner of the fence to be found about in the ‘3:00’ position if you were standing at the southern-most end of the pond.

Walk to the corner and turn facing along the fence in the direction you were already walking. Not counting the corner post, walk forward counting 12 upright posts.

When you find #12, turn toward the pond and walk directly to the water. You’ll be standing in front of a clump of pine trees.

Find the ‘twin pine’ that grows on the right-hand edge of that clump. You’ll probably have to duck into the tree branches in order to place your right heel in front of the tree. Heel to toe, take three steps south.

Look just to the right of your feet. You’ll see three pines crowing in a ‘u’ shape with a small hollow in the middle. There you will find the box hidden under the pine needles.

This spot was chosen because it’s fairly protected from sight across the pond, but walkers will be sharing the space with you. Please be cautious and make certain you use lots of needles and branches to hide it when you’re finished.

Note: this is NOT a hand-carved stamp, but was chosen because the subject was perfect for the placement. It’s also the first rubber stamp I ever bought. I hope you enjoy it!

General Info: This is a perfect box if you have a dog that enjoys the hobby with you. The park is open dawn to dusk and is always free. Please visit with caution—the waiver is in effect for this box and I can’t be responsible for anything that happens there. It’s well worth a visit though! I love to hear about my boxes so please don’t hesitate to give me reports on it’s condition— greycrazy1@yahoo.com. It was placed in honor of BeachBound Hounds, the annual greyhound owners’ party and reunion held in Myrtle Beach. For more information please visit the website at greyhoundcrossroads.com.
