UPDATE: 07/27/2009 - Box 2 is reported missing.

DIFFICULTY: Easy walk through downtown Redlands approximately one mile, you could drive parts of it, but parking is somewhat sparse.

BACKGROUND: I love comedy movies, and the first three in this series is about an old one that I consider a classic – The Blues Brothers. For those not familiar with the story line, the movie begins with Elwood Blues (Dan Aykroyd) picking his brother Jake (John Belushi) up as he gets out of jail. They then find out that they have to get $5000 dollars to the County Tax Accessor or the orphanage will be closed. So they try to put the old Blues Band back together to raise the money. In the meantime Elwood has been somewhat on the other side of the law, causing a chase scene where they drive through, and demolish, a Mall. Once recruiting the old member they go by Ray’s Music to get more instruments (Ray played by legend Ray Charles). They get a music gig and raise the necessary money, and race the money back to the government, with tons of cops after them. They get the money there just in time, save the orphanage, but end up back in prison.

CLUES:

BOX #1 (Bluesmobile): Begin at the intersection of Brookside Avenue and Eureka Street (Police station, where the prisoners are held). Drive over to the Redlands Mall across the street. As you enter the mall parking from Eureka St, turn right and Park at first available parking space. The box is located under the metal cover, of the first raised lamppost (second lamppost) to the right (south) of the garage entrance. The square metal cover slides up the lamppost to reveal the box on south side of pole. FYI, may also be home to many crickets.

BOX #2 (Ray’s Music): Proceed to the East End of the Mall and cross Orange street onto State Street (extremely busy Thursday evenings – street market). Continue up State Street to 7th street, the home of Sliger’s Music, an Icon in downtown Redlands. The box is located across the street under the Express Mailbox. This is a banking area, so try to be discrete. I recommend sitting on the small curb next to the box and reaching under from the backside (that’s how I placed it).

BOX #3 (Blues Brothers): Head South on 7th street and turn right at Citrus Avenue. Continue down Citrus to Orange/Cajon and turn left. The large building here is part of the Civic Complex (not exactly County Accessor, but close enough). As you walk around this building, head over to City Treasurer's Office (15b) adjacent to a small outside break area. Head east 40 steps toward the above ground parking structure, and turn right around the building. Sit on the wall between the two tall bushes, the box is next to the bush behind you to your right under the rock (hunk of tar for now) and plant debris. Please cover rock with plant debris, to aviod maintenance removing it.

BOX #4 (Ghostbuster): This box is a tribute to another comedy of Dan Aykroyd’s. To locate this box proceed to the A.K. Smiley Public Library on Vine (one block South of Citrus) and Eureka. Locate where non-fiction books on Ghosts and Apparitions are located (in main library, not heritage room). The box is velcro’d to the top back of the left cubby area, beneath the bottom shelf of this section. Please be discrete.

BOX #5 (Lincoln): Behind the Library is the Lincoln Shrine (open Tuesday thru Sunday 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.). To find this box locate the speech given at Peoria (engraved on the outside of the building). Sitting on the bench with your back to the speech, the box is located about 60 feet in the direction of the gap between the big Pine and Palm trees (southwest). You will find the box under pine needles at the base of the south side of the oleander bush (about 9-10 feet in from sidewalk).
