Indian Kill Nature Preserve ***3/12/06 Stamp has been replaced, box is back in its home.
This box is the first to be placed by Chile Boy, who also carved the stamp!

Estimated time: 10-15 minutes.
Clues: Easy
Terrain: steep hills down to the water, then flat.

One of the county’s most popular trails, the Claire Schmitt trail crosses the stream on a bridge built on the old dam which impounded water for the former Glenridge Hospital. The trail wanders through the 100-acre Indian Kill Preserve, (Hetcheltown Road in Glenville) and follows the banks of the Indian Kill. The preserve is comprised of a number of diverse habitats including forest, past farmed fields, and wetlands. Spring wildflowers abound in this preserve. Look for trillium, jack in the pulpits, hepatica and bishop’s cap.

Driving Directions: Westbound directions: Take Exit 25 from I-90 onto 890. Exit at Broadway, merge right onto Broadway. Go through 2 lights until light at State St/Rte 5. Turn left onto Rte 5, then 1st right onto Erie Boulevard. Follow directions below. Eastbound: Take Exit 26 from I90 onto 890. Exit onto Erie Boulevard. Continue straight through at least 3 lights, cross bridge (Erie becomes Freeman’s Bridge Rd). At 2nd light on the corner of Maple Ave (County Rte 31), turn right (north). Follow up and down hill to light. Continue straight on Maple, which is now called Hetcheltown Road. The parking and trailhead for the Preserve will be on the left (west) side of the road.

Clues: Park at the trailhead, and enter the preserve on the Claire Schmitt trail (consulting wooden trail map). After a short walk you will come to a fence and head down steep wooden steps. Follow trail down until you come to the dam. Cross bridge over the dam. Turn left, walking along the Indian Kill and count 22 paces (28 if you’re under 12), looking for a large, moss-covered log in 2 pieces off the trail to the right. Walk up the length of the log and your prize is awaiting you! Happy hunting! -Chile Boy
Please re-hide as well or better than you found it. It was hidden in the winter, and the trail was extremely icy. Bring bug spray in the warm months! Please contact us when you find it!
