Winter 2009-2010 is over. All boxes have been replanted for December 2010-2011

Blydenburgh Park is on New Mill Road in
Smithtown, Long Island.
From the Long Island Express Way (interstate 495)
get off at exit 56 go north on State Route 111
towards Smithtown after crossing State Route 347
bear left at the Gas Station on to Maple
Ave. At the end of Maple make a left on to Main
Street (you will be going west). At the second
traffic light just under the Railroad Bridge
make a left onto Brooksite Drive. At the next
traffic light make a right and follow this street
which is New Mill road into the park. These boxes
are good for family outings.

PLEASE MAKE SURE THE BOXES ARE REPLACED WELL
HIDDEN. CHILDREN SOMETIMES ARE SO EXCITED THEY
AND WE FORGET. Note: There are also geocaches in
the park.

Box # 1: Starting at the parking lot at the
north entrance on New Mill road go to the
public telephone. With the phone on your left
follow the path pass the large dumpster to
the old icehouse (converted to a stable).
Face the double doors of the icehouse and look for the large ivy covered tree. At the base of the tree is what you need to start your trip.

Box # 2 With the stable door on your right look
across in the distance to find the old farm
building (now a carpenter's shop). On the right back corner there is an attached wood shed. Under the middle boards you will find what everyone looks forward to in winter.

Box # 3 Turn around and you will see a path that
goes towards the pond (be careful it may be
slippery). Notice the beautiful view of Stump Pond
with the geese, ducks, and swans. Stump Pond is
a man made pond created by a dam across the head
waters of the Nissiquogue River. This was done
for the Grist Mill that was built in 1798 and operated
until the 1920's. Turn right at the water and
follow the path with the water on your left towards
the Grist Mill. You may see horseback riders and
dog walkers on this path. Look for the Miller's House
(built 1801-1803 by Isaac Smith, the first miller
at the Grist Mill). Go to the right side of the porch
look around the back side to fine some warmth.
This box has a new stamp since all that was left was the book.

Box#4: Continue your walk with the water
on the left & the Grist Mill on your right.
BE careful they are repairing the mill. You will
soon see two white markers. Turn in the direction
of the higher marker: right is correct.
Continue to the chainlink gate which divides
Caleb Smith State Park and Blydenburgh County Park.
Caleb Smith, Isaac Blydenburgh, and Joshua Smith were
partners in constuction of the Grist Mill
(1798). At the right hand corner of the fence
behind the tree at the bottom, you will
find what every young child wanted for Christmas.

Box #5: Turn around and retrace your steps
with the water on your right walk till you
get to the Grist Mill. Look around for the
stairs going up to the Blydenburgh-Weld House
built in 1821 now housing the Long Island Greenbelt
Trail Conference (hiking group which provides guided
group hikes all year on Long Island). Office #360-0753
This was the family home
of the Blydenburghs until 1938 when the Weld
family bought the land and its buildings.
The Welds lived in the house until 1965 when
Suffolk County, for environmental conservation,
took over the land and its buildings.
Facing the front of the house, look under
the yucca plants on the left to find the
wonder of winter.

The Blydenburgh-Weld House is open for tours
on Saturdays at 1pm. Just ring the bell at
anytime; and if we are in, you are welcomed.
We have bathrooms, water, hiking information,
and heat.

TO GET BACK TO YOUR CAR: Go past the ICEHOUSE
on your left past the DUMPTER on your right
and you are there.
Please return all boxes as you found them. Any problems contact the placer.
