***PLEASE NOTE: These clues have been updated as of 8/1/08 to account for changes in the blaze colors along these trails!***

The Crescent Trail is a footpath in the Town of Perinton, a suburb southeast of Rochester, N.Y. Twenty-six miles of trail wind through wooded hills and scenic wetlands. The Trail connects with the Erie Canal Heritage Trail (or towpath) along the banks of the Erie Canal, to the Perinton Hikeway-Bikeway, and to trails in the neighboring towns of Pittsford, Victor and Macedon. Indian Hill is one of those trails and affords one an opportunity to take a somewhat vigorous hike with some spectacular views from an elevation of 714' ASL.

Directions:

Find your way on to Rte 490 on the east side of Rochester. Exit at the Pittsford Palmyra exit onto the Rte. that Baskin-Robbins would really like. Head toward the rising sun toward the hamlit of the pyramids. You will cross the rte that is one quarter of a millenium. After you cross Turk Hill Rd., proceed 3/10ths of a mile and you will see a small parking lot on the right side of the road for Indian Hill hiking trail. Park and begin your adventure.

Clues:

From the parking lot pass through the opening in the fence. The Blue trail goes straight ahead up a steeper incline .23 miles to the summit of Indian Hill. You may take an alternative trail to the left that meanders up the hill and takes approx. 20 minutes longer. At the summit you will see a humanoid nutrition platform in the clearing. Stop here and look to the North at a pastoral scene with rolling hills and livestock grazing in the distance. Look Northwest and you will see the skyline of Rochester.

From the platform (picnic table) take the path that is at 165 degrees and enters into the woods. At the "T", turn right and follow the yellow blazes. You will exit the woods and pass alongside a meadow and the perimeter of Jensen Stables. If you are lucky, you may observe a number of horses grazing and playing in the fields to the west. As you walk back into the woods (still following the yellow blazes), you will see a tree house on your left. Please observe the Posted signs as you proceed.

As you re-enter the woods, you will come to a "Y" intersection where the yellow blazes head off to the left and some blue blazes head off to the right. Take the right branch with the blue blazes down the hill. At the bottom, cross a small creek on the wooden planks. Turn left and follow the creek. Cross the creek again and pick up the red blazes on the opposite side. You will cross a wooden platform alongside the creek meant to keep your feet dry. Keep the creek to your left. You will come to a trail on your left - take it. Within 30 steps on this new trail, you should see yellow blazes on the trees. Cross the creek and continue to follow the yellow blazes around the "dinosaur egg" laying on your right and back down to the creekside. Go uphill on the yellow trail. At a sharp left bend in the trail you will come to a tree on the left side of the trail edge that sports quite a few pieces of graffiti and declarations of love, including one spot near the top that decrees "THIS IS BEDE." At the back of this tree under some rocks you will find the symbol of INDIAN HILL. Please be discreet and rehide the box well.

Now just continue on the yellow trail up and out of the woods. You will exit the woods on the trail you walked earlier that runs along side of the open field. Take a right on this trail and observe Posted signs. The trail will reenter the woods and you will come to a "Y" Intersection. Bear left on the trail with the yellow blazes to exit the woods back to the picnic table at the summit.

To return to the parking lot, head back down the trail that runs through the grass on the left. When you reach the trees, you will see a trail that branches off to the left and heads into the woods. DO NOT take that trail; continue on to the right. You will come to a "Y" intersection. Take the right branch down the hill. The trail will lead you back to the parking lot and your car.

Hope that your trip was pleasant and that you enjoyed the countryside!!

After wet weather, this trail may be muddy and slippery. Wear proper footwear and watch your step.

Round trip without any stopping will be approx. 45 minutes. On a nice day, take a picnic lunch and enjoy the top of Indian Hill.
