The 40th president of the United States loved a certain candy. This letterboxing adventure will give you an opportunity to visit a nearby distribution center for a free tour and samples of this candy!

Before you head out, you’ll need to do a little research:

A. What year were the first flavors born? ___________

B. What year was the blueberry flavor created? ___________

C. This candy first went up in the space shuttle at the same time that the first female astronaut went. What year was this? ___________

D. How many pieces of this candy are used to make the portrait of the president who made this candy famous? ___________

E. How many flavors were created initially? ____________

F. How many “disgusting” flavors are currently in the BeanBoozled package marketed by this company? __________

Once you know the answers, take Interstate 94 (also known as US 41) South to Exit 347, then head east on Highway 165. The park you are looking for is approximately one mile from the Interstate, on the left side of the road.

The park is open to the public, but please note the following: Non-park pass holders must park on the street. Gravel and paved lots are reserved for annual pass holders only. A parking sticker is required in all lots. Violators will be ticketed.

Upon entering the park, take a left then find the beach pavilion and park nearby. Go to the sign near the side of the road that gives the name of the pavilion. Add the last 2 digits of the answer to questions A, B, and C above. ___ + ____ + ____ = ______ (G). Then divide the answer to question D by 200 and add it to (G). [ _______ / 200 = _____ + ______ (G) = ______ ] This is your compass bearing from the sign. This will point you to the correct trail. Stay on that bearing until you enter the trail.

Follow the trail along and you will pass “half a tree”. The main trail will curve to the left, keep following it. Another trail split will appear, but again stay to the left. Ignore the new empty trailboard, but instead continue until you come to an old trail map sign on your right.

Take another compass bearing equal to the difference between the answers to questions E and F. Look in the horizontal hiding place to discover who has made their way along this trail. Please rehide VERY carefully and check from several directions to be sure it can’t be seen.

You can explore more of the trails to get a view of the Des Plaines River. To return from here, go back to the sign and take the trail at 81 degrees. It will then veer to the left and end up back at the road near Picnic Area 5. The pavilion should then be in view.

The candy distribution facility is approximately 1.5 miles further east past the park. It is open almost every day of the year, except a few major holidays. Free tour and samples!! (Also lots of product available for purchase, including a good deal on factory seconds, called “flops”.) Hours are 9 am to 5 pm. You can visit it first or after you find the box. From the park, get back onto State Route 165 (Lakeview Parkway) and proceed east to State Route 31 (Green Bay Road). Turn left (North) on Green Bay Road and proceed approximately 1/4 mile to J. B. Lane. Turn left (West) on J. B. Lane into the Center.

Status updates on this box would be appreciated!
