Get off the beaten path. Leave the highway and instead enjoy a scenic drive along the Jefferson River where you are likely to see deer, antelope, many varieties of birds of prey and water fowl. Along the way find this letter box which is at a historic landmark where Lewis and Clark stopped as has many before us including the army corp of engineers who camped here and went in shifts to build the roads in Yellowstone National park.

Directions: If you are heading east on I90, get off at exit 256 for Cardwell/Boulder. Head south and turn left on the frontage road. This will take you past the Cardwell gas station/convience store (if you are low on gas get it now because it is about 30+ miles to the next station). You will see a brown historic point 1/2mile sign and in 1/2 mile is Lahood. Once you have found the box, keep on driving east and you will meet up with I90 in Three Forks exit 274.

If you are heading west on I90, get off at exit 274 Helena/Ennis. Head south over the highway (away from Wheat Montana Bakery). Just stay on that road and don't turn off even when 287 turns off and crosses the Jefferson River. You will see signs for both LaHood and the Lewis and Clark Caverns. You will pass the caverns first then LaHood is a several miles later. You will meet up with I90 in Cardwell exit 256.

Clues: When you reach Lahood it is a group of 2 buildings. On one side is the restuarant/bar and the other a small hotel (not in use). In front of the hotel are two historic signs: Lewis and Clark Expedition and Father De Smet. While facing the Father De Smet sign, look behind it to the right and see a cluster of about 6 trees. The letter box is in the base of that cluster of trees under rocks and some wood.

Once you have found the box, make sure to stop in for some lunch or dinner as La Hood has wonderful food and decadent desserts.
