Alive and well 3 JUN 2005.

This box is in memory of Topaz, a wonderful rescued greyhound. She spent her life in the Fort Worth area in the loving care of a fellow letterboxer, Krohm.

About Greyhounds:

Virtually all domestic dogs descend from the Greyhound. They can be traced back over 8000 years to early cave drawings and decorative artifacts. The first known reference to the Greyhound comes from the Egyptian Tomb of Amten, 2900-2751 B.C. Greyhounds were worshipped by the Egyptians, and are also associated with the hunting goddess Diana.

History has been replete with famous Greyhound owners including Cleopatra, Frederick the Great, Prince Albert, and Generals Von Steuben and General George A. Custer. Custer traveled with about forty hounds. One book reports that Custer's dogs were about to run a matched race the day before he left on his fatal expedition to Big Horn River in 1876.

The origin of the term Greyhound is unknown, but is not related to its color. One possibility is that it is from old English “gre-hundr”, meaning “dog hunter” or “high order of rank”. Greyhounds are related to Afghans and Salukis.

The Greyhound is the fastest breed of dog and can sprint up to 45 miles an hour for very short periods. As hunters they work cooperatively with other hounds and develop strategies of pursuit spontaneously during the chase. Because most are bred on "farms" where the breeders pay close attention to the physical soundness and emotional disposition of the puppies, hereditary physical and temperament problems have been avoided in the breed.
Greyhounds love people, and tend to be quite sociable, in fact more so than most breeds. Generally, Greyhounds are quizzical, sometimes shy, very sensitive and surprisingly gentle. They possess superior intelligence, and can exhibit a quiet but surprising independence. Greyhounds do not know how to defend themselves except by flight and will often "freeze" if attacked. Greyhounds have no fat layer, making them sensitive to cold or rain. They are not barkers by nature, but will bark if excited.

To find Topaz Memorial Box:
Go to Gulf Greyhound Park, located south of Houston. From I-45, take exit 15 and you will see the park to your west (big sign high in the air). The box is located just outside the main gates. Find the planted bed just to the east of the main entrance, between the fence and the ditch. From the west end of the bed, walk 12 paces. You should have a small tree directly on your right. The box is buried just inside the metal edging of the bed, near the splice in the metal edging. Please be as discreet as possible, and cover the box well when you return it.
