Lake to Lake Letterbox Series
The Lake to Lake Trail is a 10-mile walking path connecting Lake Sammamish with Lake Washington. It travels through the city of Bellevue traversing forests, wetlands, parks, farms, a local high school and a botanical garden. For a grand adventure, you can walk the entire length in about 3 to 4 hours one-way with additional time to enjoy the boxes located along the path. Separate directions are provided so that each group of boxes can also be enjoyed individually.
The Duck-Duck-Goose Letterboxes
The Duck-Duck-Goose letterboxes are located in the Lake Hills Greenbelt along the main trail between Phantom Lake and Larsen Lake. The path is a flat and wide gravel trail with short paved stretches suitable for walking or biking. It is approximately 1.25 miles one way between the two lakes. You can either park at the beginning of the trail at the Phantom Lake Fishing Dock/Access Point (156th Ave. SE and SE 20th Pl) or at the middle of the trail at the Ranger Station/Farmer’s Market (corner of 156th Ave SE and SE 16th St). Both places have restrooms, and the Ranger Station has a map of the trail system if you are unfamiliar with the area. Larson and Phantom Lakes are great for finding a wide variety of ducks, especially in the Fall, Winter, and Spring, so bring your binoculars!
To reach the Lake Hills Greenbelt Ranger Station and Parking Area:
From SR 520: Take the 148th Ave NE Exit and head south for 2.5 miles. Take a left on SE 16th St. and head east for 0.4 miles. The parking area for the trail is on the left just before the 4 way stop at 156th Ave SE & SE 16th St. The Phantom Lake Parking area is just south on 156th Ave SE.
From I-90: Take the 148th Ave SE Exit and head north for 1.25 miles. Take a right on SE 16th St. and follow directions above to get to the parking area.
Clues:
All three letterboxes are located along the main trail. As this trail is well used especially in the summer and on weekends, please be very discrete when retrieving and re-hiding the boxes.
Duck Box #1 resides in the Eastside circa 1895.
A Barn Swallow regularly flies over Duck Box #2.
The Goose Box is located under the Kingfisher Pond.
The other boxes in my Lake to Lake Series are the Creatures of the Deep boxes; more boxes will be planted along the trail soon. Additional boxes along the Lake to Lake trail include Little Happiness, the Kelsey Creek Park Boxes, and two Mystery Boxes.
