Alsea Bay Bridge Series

The Alsea Bay Bridge, newest of the coastal bridges spans the Alsea Bay on the central Oregon Coast. At the foot of the bridge lies the little village of Waldport. To find the Bridge Interpretive Center travel toward the ocean at the only stop light in town and turn right at the next corner. You can park beside the Interpretive Center and see the image of the historic bridge in ceramic tile on the west side of the building. Spend some time in the center learning about the former bridge as well as the construction of the one that now forms the connection across the bay.

Bridge #1
When you leave the Interpretive Center walk across the public area where the picnic tables stand to the northwest corner of the sea wall. You will see a spruce growing below you at the corner. To the right is a flight of steps that will take you down to the lower level where you can easily reach the tree and the stamp that you seek.

Bridge #2
#2 REPORTED MISSING JUNE 2005
The bridge has nice walkways on each side with lovely views of the activities in and on the bay and protection from the traffic. The walk across is a pleasant half mile stroll. Enjoy views of the harbor seals, cormorants and other sea birds, as well as the occasional eagle. When you reach the north side of the bridge, go down the steps to the wayside. You will see two spires on each side of a concrete railing. These marked the entrance to the historic bridge that once stood here. The views of the bay and boats carrying fishermen and crabbers is interesting from this point. Before you leave look in the corner of the wall that extends west from the stairs and directly south of the southeast spire. There under a rock, you will find the second letterbox of this series.

Bridge #3
Walk back across the bridge and along the seawall to Maple Street. Continue south along Maple Street and you will come to Keady Wayside which affords another look at and access to the bay as well as a different perspective of the bridge. Walk through the parking lot, around the gazebo, and to the end of the sidewalk. There under a bush and under some rocks, you will find Box #3.

Please be very discreet as all of these box sites are quite exposed; and hide them again, covering them carefully.
