The Who Lived Here? letterbox is located in Chino Valley, Arizona. Chino Valley is located about 30 miles south of I-40 between Ash Fork and Prescott on highway 89. Look for a McDonalds. That is on Road 3 North and the highway. Go west on Road 3 North about 2-3 miles. The road will curve and turn into Yuma. Cross the wash and turn left on Pheasant Place. Take Pheasant Place to Cherokee and go left. Take Cherokee to Morgan Trail and go right. Take Morgan Trail to Windrock Lane and go right. Windrock Lane will turn into a private drive. The private drive is marked by two upright timbers and is marked as such. Pull on to the side of the road. You will see on the left a trail between two fence lines. Look at the ridge to the far left and you will see the ruins on the top of the ridge. Make your way to the ruins. There is an old washed out road that will take you a good way up the hill, but you will have to pick your way up for part of it.
Stand outside of the ruins facing the wall on the side that faces the northwest. An old bush is growing close to the base. To the right of the bush is a crevice in the slab boulders that the rocks that form the wall are stacked on. A couple of lichen covered rocks are leaning in front of the crevice. In the crevice behind the rocks is the letterbox.
The hike to the ruins is not all that strenuous. It is uphill most of the way but is only about a 20 minute hike, depending on your physical condition. The trail is pretty rocky and washed out. Not good for strollers, but kids could make it no problem.
You will climb in elevation from the valley floor where the highway runs back to the ruins. The terrain will begin to get rockier and thicker with scrub oaks and juniper the further back you get. It is really quite beautiful and teeming with quail and other bird life. You can well imagine a time when you would look out over the valley and there be nothing but grasslands. It must have been a lovely place for the mysterious residents of the ruins where the Who Lived Here? letterbox is hidden.
Watch out for rattlesnakes during the warmer months. They are not common but could be present. Just be careful where you put your feet and hands.
