4/14/2006 - Box has been replaced (hopefully in a better spot) and the clues have been updated, below. I'm glad to finally get this one back out there since it was my first box ever. :)

3/30/2006 - I finally got inspired to recarve this stamp! Keep an eye out. It will be replaced within the next two weeks or so.

3/7/2005 - received notice of vandalism from forest critters. Box out of commission until further notice.

Difficulty: Easy
Time: 15 minutes

This letterbox is a tribute to one of Rockford, Illinois' few Claims to Fame. It is located in Sinnissippi Park, just across North 2nd Street from the Rock River & Sinnissippi Gardens. Park in the lot for Shelters #1 & #2, adjacent to the golf course (this is the same lot you will park in for another local tribute, Laughing Coyote's "Symbol of Rockford" box, so you'll want to find that one while you're out too).

Head down the road around a large curve, keeping the red roofs to your left. Before the road takes a sharp left, head across the clearing scattered with oaks. Keeping the playground well to your left, a large oak guarding a grill marks your entrance to the woods. Shortly, several fallen boughs will arc their way in front of you, impeding your way down the hill. One of these trees has even toppled another, and the smaller of the two holds up the weight of both while still keeping its feet in the ground.

Follow the interloper to its roots, where it once shared space with a now-dead oak, still standing proud. As you round the dead tree, one of the fallen seems to scream out in agony. It holds its secret at the breaking point.

Please hide the box in as good as or better than the condition you found it in. Thanks!
