* 07/07/05 - THIS LETTERBOX IS MISSING IN ACTION. I have heard from multiple sources that this box is no longer there. I have not had time to verfiy. I will update this listing when I have further information. Sorry!

* 05/04/05 - Letterbox survived the winter in great shape. Have fun searching for it! Please use the "Status" feature to record your find or attempt... click the green arrow above. Thanks.

Duluth is graced with a large number of "inner-city" parks and trails. This letterbox is the first in a collection of letterboxes I plan to place in order to highlight these beautiful areas.

The Rocky Hill letterbox is placed in Congdon Park, a 1.5 mile trail named for Chester and Clara Congdon that runs along Tischer Creek. The Congdon's are well known for building the beautiful Glensheen Estate on London Road. The Congdon's also had a hand in creating the Congdon Park trail. If you would like, download the trail's map at http://www.ci.duluth.mn.us/city/parksandrecreation/trailmaps/CongdonTrail.pdf . The whole trip should take about 20 min. and the terrain is pretty easy.

1.) Begin at the trail entrace located at 31st Ave. E. and 4th St., right by East High School. Park on 4th St., and walk to the trail entrance on the upper side of the street; it's marked with a wooden sign (Congdon Park 1.5 Mile Hiking Trail)

2.) White gravel marks the trail. Traveling for a short time, you will come to two steps. A little further, another series of steps. At the top of the second set, the gravel ends.

3.) Continuing on, the trail will begin to incline steeply and get very rocky. Near the point where this begins, a thin trail intersects the path. Stand at the edge of the right intersection (marked by plastic orange ribbons).

4.) Take 6 paces towards the large rock in the middle of path.

5.) Stand on top of this rock and take another 6 paces. You should be standing by a thin tree growing out of a rock. On the right should be the creek (and a great waterfall), and on the left should be a rocky hill.

6.) Take another 6 paces towards the hill. You should be right at the very bottom.

7.) 6 feet in front of you will a broken birch tree. Under 2 small birch logs is a natural hole in the hill, and in this hole you will find the letterbox.

As always, please make sure to put things back just like you found them. If you have some time, go sit on the rocks nearby and look up at the waterfall. Enjoy!
