THIS LETTERBOX IS MIA, AS OF 1/15/05. ORIGINAL PLANS WERE TO REPLACE IT IN SPRING 2005. THAT...ERRR...DIDN'T HAPPEN. AS I HAVE MOVED TO NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, IT MAY BE QUITE A WHILE UNTIL THIS IS REPLACED. SORRY. LE CHAPEAU EST MORT...VIVE LE CHAPEAU!
The entrance to Hatfield Township Nature Area Centennial Park is located on Cowpath Rd. (aka PA-463, aka Main St. Hatfield), about one tenth of a mile west of Orvilla Road. The entrance is across from Harleysville Savings Bank. For more info, see http://www.hatfieldtownship.org/towndept/parks_htna.asp
From the north corner of the parking lot, spot two signposts at about 50*. Go to the signposts.
Walk between the signposts, following the blue blazes. You will pass an amphitheatre on your right; at this point, the blue trail bears to the left. Look for blazes.
At a Y, go 80* between two blue-blazed trees. Soon you will go over a gully and a wooden bridge.
At a Y, go 160*, and look for white blazes. At another Y, go 120* and look for white/red blazes. Soon they will just be red.
Crossover a drain pipe. Stop here. Standing on the drainpipe, take a bearing of 70*. Spot a large V-shaped tree near the creek. Go to this tree. (There’s a faint trail leading to it two paces ahead of the drainpipe.) Look for a hollow log on the ground to the right of the V-tree. Your “old hat” is in the base of this log. Please rehide it carefully.
To return to your car just a bit more quickly, head back to the red trail, walking at 320*. At the tree with the double red blaze, go 210* to stay on the red trail. The red trail winds into a meadow.
Go to the northwest corner of the meadow, past two benches. Take the grassy path there, stay to the left, and you’ll be back at your car in no time.
